Air Asia to MAS flight - clearing immigration

HI,

I am hoping someone may have had recent experience with similar flights. We arrive at KLIA2 with Air Asia from Krabi, at 16.50pm and were hoping to catch a MAS flight to Syd at 19.50pm. I have checked FAQ and know it is advised to allow at least 3-4hrs. Too risky? Our flights are in about 3 weeks.

There is a later MAS flight at 23.45pm, which we could take but we are really trying to get home as early as possible. If we booked the later flight but got to the airport in time for the earlier flight would they let us on - without a huge fee?

Would much appreciate anyones advice with similar experiences.

Regards,

Julie

Hi

A] possibly, that is all we can say. Who knows . . . flights on time, missing bags, queues at immigration . . .

A] No, they won't let you on!

Currently your schedule allows only 3 hours in between flights.

Some things to consider...

AirAsia flies in to KLIA2.

MAS flies out from KLIA1.

Two separate terminals 2km apart. There is a complimentary shuttle between the two but it runs only every 15-20 minutes. There is also the KLIA Ekspress train or KLIA Transit train, once again running every 15-20 minutes, the time between departure at KLIA2 to arrival at KLIA is 4 minutes.

KLIA2, though a Low Cost terminal, is reported to be quite large (we've not been there yet, heading through for the first time in less than 2 weeks). Friends who have been through advised it took them up to 30 minutes to walk from their gate to immigration (they are slow walkers, but even if you half this you're looking at 15 minutes). You then queue to clear immigration, and head to the luggage carousels. And then you go through Customs - now often in Malaysia you are just waved through, but we have had times when they are scanning all bags!

Realistically even if your AirAsia flight lands on time at KLIA2, it may still take 5-15 minutes to taxi to the gate, then another 10-15 minutes to get off the plane depending on where you're seated and how slow people are to disembark.

Your flight from KLIA with MAS is an international flight. Generally the recommendation is to be at the airport 2 hours prior to your flight (nowadays with security checks as they are the majority of international check-in opens up to 3 hours prior to flights). While check-in counters may close as little as 1 hour prior to your flight, if you are just arriving or are in the queue, 1 minute late can mean missing your flight - airlines have strict deadlines because every minute delay costs them thousands!

You're cutting it very very fine. Is it really worth the stress?

As TM said, no, they won't let you on the earlier flight... Or if they do it may cost you quite a bit in fare differences.

If there has been any hiccups earlier in the day with Air Asia the domino affect mean flights later in the day have a greater chance of running behind schedule which means missed connections.

What a way to ruin your holiday if you had to buy a whole new flight home for two people.

Book the later flight and eliminate any stress.

Thanks very much for your replies .

After your advice and more thought - yes definitely not worth it. We have booked the later flight - I will have 7 hours to shop while in transit - YAY :)

cheers,

I believe there is a massage spa at either KLIA or KLIA2 which would be an excellent way to use up some of that waiting time.

Google KLIA and visit the website to find out where its located.
