Gay and Lesbian Maldives

Does anybody know if any Maldivian Islands cater (although not exclusively) towards the gay and lesbian market? Not so sure there

are any 'gay friendly' resorts in this part of the world. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thx :-)

Hi

I don't know off any resorts who cater specifically towards the gay market, but not sure if I'm missing something on the special requirements front :-)

We've been to the maldives 3 times and met couples of all persuasions, nobody appeared to be interested in what anyone elses preferences were, nor were the staff. The good thing about the maldives is that there are lots of little hideaways so its not difficult to be discrete (after all it is a muslim country) whatever your lifestyle is.

Hopefully without sounding painfully PC hope that helps and have a good time.

Suz

um, I may be wrong but I think that homosexuality is illegal in the Maldives, and punishable by jail or fines, so I doubt that any island could openly market itself as being 'gay friendly'.

The maldives is a strictly muslim country even alcohol is illegal on the local islands.

The answer is no island caters towards gay vistors it is not a consideration as the other poster says this is a Muslim country. . However saying that , we have been 3 times to 3 different island and met with no problems You may get questions asking is your partner brother, sister mother, friend etc . We just say friends ,in fact we told them very good friends and how many years, smiled and that seemed to end the curiosity and it made no difference to how we were treated. I think you just have to respect their culture and behave accordingly and it doesn't effect us enjoying ourselves.

According to Lonely Planet, all(!) extra marital relations are illegal in the Maldives, but the same rules do not apply to the resorts - which is why you won't find any mixed local and reort islands and tourists are strictly segregated. LP therefore advises to be discreet or keep displays of affection etc behind closed doors - this applies to all couples! Furthermore while no resort markets itself to gay tourists, it is comon to see gay couples in the resorts. There were gay couples at Vakaru when we were there in March this year.

My partner and I are headed to Kuramathi in late January, and we can't wait. We don't think much about the gay-rights situation in places where we travel; every place has its problems. We just want to sit on the beach, snorkel and scuba dive; we certainly wouldn't do anything that could get us in trouble. I'll certainly report back when we've returned.

Hi SezzyP

We was in Meedhuparru last xmas and met up with two guys that was on there honeymoon. They did not have any problems if fact quite the opposite. Was life and sole of the party so to speak.

Was very good fun socializing with them and very helpful to me personally as I posed girlfriend of 15 years they helped make it perfect for us. We get married in feb and going back to Maldives cant wait.

I would say just remember where you are, and may need to be a bit reserved at times.

Hope this helped.
