If you go to www.xe.com it will have the current exchange rates for most currencies. You will not get that exchange rate in the shops as the few % difference is where they make their profits.

1.5 to the pound sounds about right at the moment, but see is you can find somewhere that doesn't charge commission!

I know Marks and Spencer Bureaux de Changes offer commission free currency exchange.

Their quoted rate today for the $ is $1.4855 = £1.

The Post Office also do commission free and their rate today is $1.5177 = £1

With US$ it is best to take small denomination billls as these are more practical for tipping etc.

The Post Office do usually offer better rates than anyone else. Having said that M&S last summer did marginally better!

Not sure how much you are taking, but some places offer better rates if you buy over a certain amount with free commission, cant remember what the amount was but I believe it was 500 USD; worked out well for us as we went to USA shortly afterwards so were able to continue with the currency after the Maldives......

Try also Thomas Cook...last year they asked what rate I had been offered and said they would beat it for $500 worth.

Hi

To be realistic when only talking about 400/500 dollars the difference in cost amounts to a few pounds not really worth the leg work or the petrol to chase it. If you're paying the whole holiday in US dollars because you're dealing with a foreign agent and need to transfer a large amount it's best to go to a proper foreign exchange dealer like UK Forex definitely not a bank who will charge for the transfer and give a rubbish rate

in Bath the best rate was from Marks and Sparks however now that the new Southgate centre is open Debenhams are the best, not by much though
