If you're going alone in Makati and elsewhere in Metro Manila: you'll be safe and fine as long as you stay inside commercial establishments such as Malls--you'll soon find that Manila buildings have lots of uniformed security guards scattered everywhere (not to mention the undercover security personnl in plainclothes).

If you go outside of the buildings alone and you look foreign or don't speak the local language and you're not smart about your belongings--you'll be a magnet for thieves especially during Christmas time.

Shopping tips:

1) SM Mall of Asia (Asia's largest mall) fronting Manila Bay (this is near the airport)

2) Greenhills modern airconditioned flea market in San Juan, Metro Manila...the favorite of Filipinos (practice your price-negotiation skills)

3) "Market! Market!" mall in Bonifacio Global City

(prices are less negotiable but the goods are already inexpensive yet there's a lot of variety)

4) Tiendesitas in Frontera Verde (exotic, hard-to-find Philippine goods)

Makati/Manila has practically anything and everything under the sun--all kinds of food, all kinds of entertainment, all sorts of shopping--for a whole less expense than most Asian destinations.

I stayed at this place before but it is in Malate instead of makati. They provide you with free escort or tour guide for 3 hours for free if you stay at their apartment beside a shopping mall with hundreds and hundreds of shops.Maybe you could give it a try at:

Looks like a bargain to me.. Guides and all offered. Next to Robinson's shopping center.. and a little night life.

I have a friend that was here or next to it. am not connected in any way.. Worth a look.

i advise you to not to book through suspicious, sleazy websites. go instead to reputable websites, if you must book online. try agoda or planet holiday.

makati is quite safe. like every where else, when in a large metropolis, keep your head on and be street smart. makati is also very central. it's near a lot of shopping, bars and restaurants, like greenbelt, glorietta, serendra, etc.

but since makati is the business disrict, there's not a lot of "culture" there, except the museum. for cultural stuff, try taking the intramuros guided walking tour in manila. your hotel can probably recommend a reputable tourist guide. so, if you intend to go at it alone, better take it. make sure you stay at a good hotel and not some sleazy apartment. makati is a lot like singapore and ayala avenue is its orchard road.

Tour guide from this place is only a buck fifty an hour.. or less.. I would suggest one if you have nobody from the area.. At least for a day or so..

hi Mariposa, in addition to suggestions made by pasimuno, you could also visit:

- the new Trinoma (Triangle North Manila) mall in Quezon City

- Manila Ocean Park, the country's first oceanarium

- Greenbelt, if you are looking for the best night spot. there are also a long line of botiques here where you could shop for everything

As the other posters suggested, just always be alert and be wary of scammers. stay away from dark alleys and dress as simply as possible when you go out to avoid attracting thieves and snatchers
