A first time Manila visit

My friend and I will be in Manila in October. We want to spend one day shopping because this is the last stop on a three week Asia adventure.

We are staying at the Peninsula. I have read the archives and find that Greenhills and Divisoria are suggestions for bargain shopping. The opinions are VERY different based on price, safety, etc.

Which is closer to our hotel? What would travel time be? How late are these malls open? Which do you think is the best shopping for handicrafts, pearls, etc.

As always, Trip Advisor readers are the best source of travel information.

For first timer, my advice is not to go to Divisoria.

Go to GreenHills instead. More organised and safer.

Greenhills.

For handicrafts, you can also check out Kultura Filipino store at SM Makati (walking distance from Peninsula).

Yes, definitely Greenhills first. Never go to Divisoria if you have not digested yet the ways on how things work in the Philippines. Especially if you have limited time only in Manila.

IMHO, go to Divisoria/ Tutuban maybe on your 2nd visit. Or if you have already spent at least 2 weeks in the Philippines and you are well adjusted.

Greenhills might have all the things that you might be looking for. Also SM MegaMall is close by as an alternative.

...Greenhills. The price difference is negligible considering the traffic, chaos that you will encounter in Divisoria.

...The items are more or less the same altho Greenhills seem to have better choices. Divisoria unless you know where to go, can overwhelm you.

Firstly. it is dirty on the roads. Many visitors from developed countries cannot tolerate it.

Secondly, there are pickpockets in that area so you have to be careful about your belongings.

Thirdly, Divisoria is a huge area. You can get lost easily if you lost your orientation. Malls like 168 and 999 is ok but once you step out, it is a huge jungle.

Since you are allotting only one day for shopping, just go to Greenhills.

'What would travel time be?' -30 to 45 mins going, 1 hour back (via taxi).

'How late are these malls open?' -Mall hours is 10am-8pm Sun-Thu and 10am-9pm Fri&Sat.

When you're done with your one day shopping, you can alternatively do some pockets of mini-shopping in the Ayala Center area which is just across your hotel (Glorietta/Greenbelt/Landmark).

How many days you have for the Philippines and how many for just Manila?

Like previously stated, go to Greenhills unless you are well-traveled in third world countries and adventurous.

If I'm not mistaken you are also going to Bangkok. If I were you I'd do all the shopping in Bangkok because the shopping there is better than Manila.
