9 hrs in Manila

Hi,

I arrive into Manila at 11am and fly out at 8.30pm.

I'd like to get out and see a bit of the city in this time?

What is the best way to get around? And what are the highlights I should aim for in this timeframe.

Thanks,

Lee

Let's assume that you store your luggage at teh airport (see pother TA threads) or only have hand luggage.

You may be out of the airport if the flight is on time at say 1130; you will need to be back at 1845 or 1900 at the latest.

Catch a yellow airport taxi to Intramuros. Have lunch near San Augustin Church; inspect it and the associated museum from say 1400 when the museum should be open after its staff lunch break.

Then look at other areas of Intramuros. Ride a calesa (horse drawn carriage) but try to get the driver to sign a chit agreeing on the price when you step in, as they are notorious for arguments.

After that go to either Robinsons Place Mall in Ermita (10 minutes away) or Mall of Asia (half an hour or more away) by taxi for shopping and a drink or two to refresh you.

At 1730 or 1745, head back to the airport in a taxi. say 'meter po' (rolling your rssss) each time you get in a taxi to tell the driver to switch on his meter; most will automatically, though.

Resorts World Manila (casino, restaurants and shops) is opposite manila NAIA Terminal 3 if you have further time.

This is a perfect layover plan. I'd suggest adding this as a Top Question (FAQ). It is well written and very helpful.

Excellent suggestion from Vlad. Head to San Agustin Church, across from it is Casa Manila, where there's a small bistro, and have lunch. San Agustin has a very nice museum. From there you can walk around or hire a calesa.

Beware that taxis may be hard to find when you start heading back to the airport. MOA has a good queuing system for taxi though.

I might suggest as an alternative to MOA (although I think it's great place to hang out a bit) due to time constraints, I suggest from Intramuros head to Makati Greenbelt. There's the Ayala Museum which I think is a world class private museum (historical not art), and there's shopping/eating. It is more modern, like any western business district, with 4 interconnected malls, nice small cafes, albeit more expensive. It is closer to the airport, and there's taxi queing system at any of the malls.

Oh, it will be hot that time of day, so don't overdo it.

Mall of Asia is closer to the airport than Greenbelt.

I'd suggest Mall of Asia before heading to the airport. You can relax better in the Mall of Asia...have coffee in coffee shops fronting the bay area..

What's wrong with the mall at Resorts World, opposite terminal 3?

Right. MOA is closer to the airport than Greenbelt. Shouldn't have probs getting a taxi from there.

Again, isn't the Resorts World mall closest?

Yes. Resorts World Mall closest, across from T3. I only suggested Makati Greenbelt because of the Ayala Museum. But MOA is closer than Greenbelt.
