Motorcycle shipping, USA west coast to Manila?

I want to ship my motorcycle from west USA to the Phils next year to begin my round the world ride. But one guy told me they'll charge customs duties way to high, like 300%, and my bike is worth $8k usd. does anyone know any info on sea/air cargo , and the customs/duties with such a shipment? help me!

@ Tom

are you doing this through a "Balikbayan" courrier service? West coast - esp. Oregon - California and Washington areas have a lot of Balikbayan services that ship motorcycles cheaper.

Just check the rate from them.

Google "balikbayan xxx place to xxx".

It is common for Filipinos to bring loads of stuff from USA back to the Phils (clarification - you do not have to be Filipino to use a balikbayan service)

It's 100% illegal to put a motorcycle in a balikbayan box - although those with the right "contacts" get away with it.

Checking the Bureau of Customs website, no reference to "tourist's vehicles" was found.

However, "Republic Act No. 4136" Section 7 (p) expressly states that a "tourist" may import and use a vehicle for up to 90 days, but details must be registered with the Land Transportation Commission before operation of the vehicle.

You will need a good Customs Agent to organise for you,

and it might be a good idea to have a lawyer standing by also!

Try www.shipoverseas.com they specialise in bikes, ATV,s etc. It can be expensive and a real hassle. People even take thier bikes apart, and ship as parts, but then you have the problem of registering them at the other end. Motorcycles are expensive to buy in the Philippines also, compared to USA, usually costing around 50% more than US prices. Tough choice to make

Just to correct the suggestion by PHoenix242 - there is no registration for a "tourist temporary import" - the vehicle stays with it's original country of origin registration.

Vetus I am talking of illegally shipping in as parts, to avoid permanent registration, people do this, but then you have to some how illegally register the vehicle. Just to correct you

Expect to pay a lot of custom duties for your motorcycle wherever you go and also expect a lot of paperwork when you cross borders. I would highly suggest for you to contact Herman Zapp who did an around-the-world trip with his family using his vintage car and I'm sure he has a lot of tips for you. He shipped his car from Japan to the Philippines then traveled next to Malaysia.

@Tom,

....with all the troubles, complications you will encounter, you'd better be shipping a Harley(Harley-Davidson)!!! As the saying goes. "put your a** in some class". But as you mentioned , only worth $8K? Must be a cheap Japanese mc...not worth it then.

...contact Bayanihan Cargo, San Francisco, Ca. Speak to Manny, owner and a friend of mine. He'll accommodate your wish and make it easier for you.

.... Happy riding...;-)

Papalo, you are guilty of endorsing business just like "some so called experts" here (to borrow a phrase from a dear friend :) )
