World Trade Center/CITEM

Will be in Manila to attend Manila FAME at World Trade Center in October. What's the best area and hotel to stay? From the postings I've read, I'm not sure where to go. I'm bringing my non-Filipino husband who's never been to the Phils. I'd like for him to see the nitty-gritty/realistic parts of town (I'm fromTondo but left in '69!) as well as the nice parts where I'd like to stay.

The hotels closest to the World Trade Center are the Hotel Philippine Plaza (formerly Westin, now run by Sofitel), Traders Hotel and Century Park. Among the 3, Philippine Plaza is the most expensive -- they have a nice lagoon-shaped pool and great views of the sunset at Manila Bay. It is also only 15 minutes away from the Mall of Asia which is the largest and one of the newest shopping centres in the Metro. Another option is the Hyatt Hotel and Casino Manila which a bit further away, but is walking distance to the Robinson's Place mall in case you want to do some shopping. It's located in the Malate area which is an older part of town (compared to Makati), but has a lot of character.

If you have time, Carlos Celdran has walking tours of interesting parts of Manila. Check out celdrantours.blogspot.com

Of course you can also opt to stay in Makati which is more modern and central to everything, but is about 30-45 minutes away from the World Trade Center. The hotels I can recommend in this area are the Renaissance Makati City Hotel, Shangri-La Makati, Peninsula Manila and the Intercontinental Manila.

How about Ortigas Center? How does it compare to the Makati area?

Astoria Plaza and Discovery Suites looks like a viable place. Which one would be more accommodating if I were to have some relatives spend the night? Not the whole tribe, just 2 or 3 people.

I'd say Discovery Suites would be nicer, however Ortigas is quite a distance from the World Trade Center.

I'd also go for Discovery Suites if you want to be in the Ortigas area while the Philippine Plaza would be best for the World Trade activities. The Philippine Plaza and World Trade Center are located in the same area, the CCP Complex thus making it very convenient to attend the Manila FAME then go back to the hotel to rest, then go back again to FAME then later probably shop or dine at the SM Mall of Asia nearby.
