Cheap lunch venue?

We've spent all our money on buying the holiday, lol! Is there a good 'local venue' (forgot what they're called begins with 'l') where we could get a veggie lunch when we go visit the castle & museum? Thanks.

ps If there's similar in Bitez would be handy too. :)

That's the word! Is there a good one that isn't just meaty/fishy? :)

We love to eat in the little restaurants upstairs at the bus station where they have the markets. The food is good and cheap and they have veggie options too.

There's a great little one not too far from the Castle.

Google Coordinates: 37.035593,27.43174

On Carsi Sokak... which is just opposite the much larger Ataturk Caddesi.

This is a really popular local Lokanta - and is tucked down this side street, on the left hand side and you turn off from Cevat Şakir Caddesi ... which is the main road that leads from the Castle up to the dolmus station.

There's also a few more little gems further along Ataturk Caddesi ... towards the area where the Istankoy hotel is. These are a little off the beaten track, but good lokantas.

Thanks RJ, this may be an 'odd' question but does the one on Carsi sk have a name? How do these cafes (?) work, don't want to look to silly if we find it to try. :)

I bet there's some Sufi saying about finding one's own way to wisdom/food.

Top tips ;-)

Move at least one street behind the main tourist area

Look for place that seem unassuming, nice clean table but not much else.

See if locals are eating there.

Go inside and look at the display of food, usually in a glass fronted heated cabinet (I'm sure theres a proper name for them ...) There will likely be 5 or 6 options for a main and then rice or maybe pasta, sometimes potatoes.

Select the dishes you want - pointing will surfice if the english is limited - to avoid meat you can comfirm by asking et varma? meaning is there meat in it? or et siz istiyorum meaning I want it without meat.

There should be veggie options but if possible discuss with the server, generally they'll be more than happy to explain the food on offer.

Sit at a table and await your food.

One place I eat at often is near the mosque, actually it breaks rule one :o) to find it walk down the main road from the bus station and look on your left for an open space and the mosque after about 150 yds with some steps up to it, you'll understand when you see it :o) on the left a few yards up is the place, sorry no idea what its called.
