Austin fun with teens - music?

We are coming to Austin for a long weekend in August. We will have two 13 year olds. We plan to visit Barton Springs, but what other things could we do with them that might include music or other possible swimming holes that kids would enjoy? My husband and I would love to listen to some live music somewhere that would also be appropriate with kids. Would Lake Travis offer something like that? We are staying in north Austin. Thanks!!

The Oaisis would be a good choice for an evening with music and is family friendly, with live music Wednesday - Sunday http://www.oasis-austin.com/

It will be hot, so dress accordinginly. Town Lake (now known as Lady Bird Lake) has the Texas Rowing Center where you can rent kayaks or canoes. One of my favorite Sunday morning things to do is kayak in teh morning, then head over to Maria's Taco X-press for breakfast tacos, the music there starts at noon. The Bob Bullock Museum is well-done; make sure you see the movie in the Star of Texas Theater. There's also a 3-D theater with first-run movies as well as Texas-themed. For other swimming holes, most will be about 45 minutes from north Austin, Krause Springs is a good choice. Hamilton Pool is good but sometimes closes if it's full -- it's a Travis County Park, so they limit access. The drought has left us with very little water in the area. August is also a good time to see the bats that fly out from the Congress Ave bridge.

I put a lot of effort into writing down good family things to do, read this: tripadvisor.com/Travel-g30196-s401/Austin:Te…

Volente beach would be fun for your kids (call to be sure they are open, water levels are really low due to the drought). They would also LOVE Schlitterbahn water park. visitsanantonio.com/visitors/…

Nutty Brown cafe is another venue with family-friendly music - though it is south of town.

The free Cronicle newspaper will list all the music. If you're going to be here as early as Thursday, local radio station KGSR sponsors free, kid-friendly concerts http://www.kgsr.com/roadshows/listings.aspx

Local home-cooking restaurant Threadgill's offers free music too

Circus is in town Aug 17-21 www.uterwincenter.com/events/index.html

Prepare for the heat - it's likely to be over 100 degrees when you're here!

Check the weather before you arrive. The temperature has been well over 100 degrees lately. During the day, plan to stay cool. Someone already mentioned the Bob Bullock Museum of Texas History which is modern and up-to-date. The state capital is nearby...and air conditioned...so plan for a tour.

Barton Springs is the cool-down place, but few know that you can hike south along a trail which follows a creek. People of all ages cool off in the tiny waterfalls along the creek.

Hidden from the street are Kayak rentals. They are found along the northwest side of the Barton Creek pool. You have to walk down to the free doggie pool area to find the kayak rentals. There are no signs so an insider has to tell you.

Many teens like the hike and splashing in the creek water to the north west side of the Barton Creek pool.

Going the opposite direction to the south side of the Barton Creek pool there is a cave along that creek that I won't tell you how to find it, but will entertain your teens looking for it. Recently the temp was 90 at midnight which is still swimming weather. People of all ages like to splash in the water from the tiny water falls on the south side of the pool along the creek.

The website real-austin-texas dot com lists some yearly festivals in August that will entertain teens. My advice is to tire out teens in the evening hours after 5pm with swimming so they sleep late or go out very early in the morning before the sun gets too hot.

At the McNeil overpass off of I-35 in Round Rock are bats that fly out about 7:30pm by the millions. Its a sight to see. Park in the Big Lots parking lot to watch...then go swimming again cause its H-O-T in Texas.

KGSR local radio station hosts a concert series every other Wednesday night in Zilker Park, it's called Blues on the Green, the next one is July 20. KGSR also hosts free music at Shady Grove every Thursday. http://www.kgsr.com/roadshows/listings.aspx

Your teens would probably think riding the Duck is a hoot.

www.austinducks.com/ definitely make a reservation through the Austin Visitor's Center at 209 E. 6th, The Duck is really popular during the summer and frequently sells out.

Welcome to Austin!
