30 somethings looking for lively area to stay

My husband and I are heading to Austin with another couple in January for the George Strait concert.

We are thinking of staying in a VBRO Downtown near the Hilton but we we keep reading that downtown is for 20 somethings...is there an area that is recommended for mid-late 30's? Maybe west side of downtown? Or will be be fine?

I've seen people of all ages having a great time in the downtown/6th street area. Vacationers and convention attendees come in ALL ages! I don't think there's anything for children in the area at night but that's understandable.

The university and younger crowd usually show up around midnight.

Welcome to Austin!

Yankeetransplant response said what I was going to say. You will be fine in the VBRO you like near the Hilton. Downtown is a hub for huge number of convention center attendees, office workers, tourists of all ages, culture event attendees of all ages and yes, the college crowds at night. We also have a huge number of permanent residents living in the ultra highrise condos all over the downtown area. We even have grocery stores just for them. They are out and about all day and night because that is where they live. The college kids tend to hover on 6th Street, Warehouse District and Rainey Street.

Here is link to my favorite downtown street and Austin Java and Jo's Cafe are great places for a casual breakfast where you can sit outside and people watch if you wish.

http://www.2ndstreetdistrict.com During the day and into the evening this one street is home to shops, casual dining and very nice restaurants.

If you can, visit the 2nd floor bar of The Driskill Hotel. Google Images has great photos of it.

In the past few months a new crop of very nice bars have popped up amongst the college age bars on 6th St. It is now a mixed bag. Just be careful. We are having some crime in the downtown area and there are alot of homeless people in the areas around 6th Street downtown.

You will see some gift shops downtown with Texas souvenirs, but my favorite is the huge gift shop in the lobby of the Bob Bullock History Museum. There is no fee to visit the gift shop or the casual cafe upstairs. Also, the State Capitol has a nice stand alone building on the east lawn that houses a gift shop with unique Texas gifts that you can take home.

Visit other recent Austin posts about food/music/sights. We tend to give out lots of info and links about Austin.

Also, YouTube has some great videos to give you an idea of what downtown looks like. Search: Lady Bird Lake, Austin SoCo, Austin Downtown, Congress Avenue Austin and Capitol of Texas.

I was cruising YouTube and found some new videos that I have never posted before of downtown Austin:

Locals call the area of 6th street east of the Driskill (apprx) "Dirty Sixth." A visitor shouldn't have any problems beyond being pestered by pan handlers. Just use common sense.

There are good bars and restaurants in the area, and some great live music, so don't necessarily avoid the area, simply be forewarned.

I would recommend South Congress or 2nd Street for a little more upscale and mature crowd
