What to do for a day trip from San Antonio?

Will be visiting and staying in San Antonio over a 3 way weekend in a couple of weeks. Considering a day trip to Austin. If so, what should we see/do, and not miss for such a day visit?

Also, any recommendations for restaurants? Looking for something that is typically Austin, perhaps a kind of landmark restaurant, or dining institution to not miss?

Thanks, we appreciate all the help.

What types of things are you looking to do? There's a great Texas history museum, there a lot of unique local shopping opportunities, a bunch of live music venues. My favorite restaurants in Austin right now are Foreign and Domestic http://fndaustin.com/ and Vespaio http://www.austinvespaio.com/ but there are MANY others.

Since you are traveling with your Mom and your Aunt, I am assuming that downtown Austin would be the spot you pick for your day trip?

Be sure and take them to the Bob Bullock History Musuem. You do not have to pay to have access to the beautiful rotunda entry where there is a huge Texas souvenir gift shop. Upstairs is a very casual order at the counter cafe and there are tables outside on a veranda if you want a coffee break.

The State of Texas Capitol is a few block down the street if you desire, as well as the new $3 million remodel of the LBJ Library.

My favorite street at the corner of Congress and 2nd goes for 4 blocks of shops, casual restaurants and regular restaurants. It is called the 2nd St. District. It is tree lined and many of the restaurants have sidewalk dining in addition to indoors.

Whole Foods at the corner of Lamar & 6th is the "Disneyland" of supermarkets. It is loaded with about 20 kiosks of serve yourself hot, cold food items or soups or some place and order kiosks. You can then pay cashier for your food and take the elevator up to the roof to dine or find a table inside. I personally, love their BBQ and all it's fix ins. They even have a bar in that dept. where you can sit out the counter on stools and eat the BBQ. The brisket is so tender I never need a fork!

This is a restaurant across the Congress Avenue bridge that is an Austin icon. It is Texas style homecookin and has tons of memorabilia all over the walls. Probably a little to far to walk from 2nd Street & Congress. I do it, but your Mom may not be up for it. It is Threadgills on Riverside:

Enjoy!
