The zoo is really not worth a trip. (Especially after seeing you're from San Diego). The Austin Zoo started as an animal rescue facility and farm (it's earliest name was "Good Day Ranch"). It slowly started getting larger animals to rescue. If you are truly interested in animals, you might find it interesting. You can get fairly up close to the tigers. It is very rustic.

I recommend you go to the farmers market if here over the weekend. There's one downtown at 4th & Guadalupe. In addition to produce, you'll also find prepared foods and normally music

Sunday's (from 11 - 3) is the Bluebonnet Market at South Lamar & Bluebonnet. This one expands into more crafts and bills itself as a flea market.

If you're arriving by Thursday evening (2/6) you'll be here in time for South Congress First Thursday.

There's no major events going on that weekend that I'm aware of.

Depending on the weather, you could enjoy time on Lady Bird Lake, renting a canoe (may be too cold for kayaks) and walking the trail. Segway tours are fun.

If you're going to venture out of town, you could hike Enchanted Rock (it would be almost a full day-trip out to the hill country).
