Unique things to do for Austin Getaway June 20-23

Any good food (food truck suggestions welcome) out there that's not available in Chicago and Houston? I'm a city person.I live most in Chicago but relocated to Houston last August. I'm staying at the Holiday Inn Townlake travelling with wife and 7-year old daughter.

I'm not familiar with the Chicago food truck scene, so I can't tell you what's available here and not there, but there are some really good interesting food truck options in Austin.

Generally, my recommendation for first time visitors would be to check out the following - East Side King, Torchy's at the Trailer Park on South First, Hey! Cupcake for cupcakes, Gourdough's for huge sweet and savory doughnuts, and Chi'lantro for an interesting mix of Mexican food and Korean BBQ

We've had extensive discussions about food truck options in the past, so you may want to do a quick search on the forum for those threads.

To be honest with you as a Austin Resident that travels my take on the food truck scene in Austin is this.......

They have gone WAY WAY WAY in the wrong direction!- Food trucks used to be a good source of GOOD food and GOOD prices. Now it seems that people have caught onto the business model and are using it to serve what is often bad food at NOSE BLEED PRICES!

Example: I went to a local brewery(Rogness) and was drinking with friends and needed to eat something so I went outside because a food truck was there......I ended up with a $0.50 bread roll stuffed with 2oz of lobster for $15.00!......(I had been drinking and it was the only option they had)

However I will say there is one place where I have been finding food trucks that are worth it in Austin and that's at the Adelbert's Brewery on Saturday....I was there a couple of weeks ago and there was a Cuban food truck; and I had never had "loaded yucca fries" before and was pleasantly surprised at how AWESOME it was!......Yucca fries with pulled pork, cheese, black beans and onion for $6.00 - It was excellent and the portion was more than worth the price.

If you like good beer with a food truck on site I suggest Adelbert's brewery on Saturday!

You pay $13.00 and get a glass and wristband and proceed inside to the bar where you can try their beers and they have a food truck and picknick tables set up outside; its a good lunch option as I think its open 1-4pm on Saturday.

Walking from your hotel to 6th Street is a little far, especially for a 7 year old. Your hotel shuttle is a good option and will take you to 6th St. I don't recommend walking back to your hotel after dark. I'm hearing that the staff at the Holiday Inn is especially helpful and friendly and that's good to hear since their location is a little out of the way.

Welcome to Austin!
