IF you have 6 hours...

If you only have six hours to spend in Alexandria, what would you see/do???

We will arrive at Dulles midday, we have booked the first night in a hotel in old town Alexandria, next day we will be heading toward Williamsburg. We assume we have about 6 hours free to see Alexandria and then find a restaurant to have dinner before we go back to the hotel.

It sounds like you'll have a car. If so, I'd drive 10 miles south of Alexandria and visit Mount Vernon for a few hours. The new Education Center there is wonderful. You can then come back to Old Town for dinner. Just wandering up and down King Street (the main east/west street in town) will give you a great feel for the place.

Dear twocoasts, thank you for your response.

Yes, we are having a car (booked one at Dulles).

On the next day of our arrival/same day we are planning to drive towards Williamsburg we have already planned an early breakfast followed by 2 hours visit to Arlington cemetery, then driving downwards and spending till about 5-6 p.m at Mount Vernon. Thereafter drive to Williamsburg.

We want to know how best to use the six hours we have during the day of our arrival (is there anything that we ought not miss to se in Alexandria)???

Hi:

It may depend on what day you are here. If it's a weekend, there may be a special event going on that you'll want to attend. Check www.funside.com to see upcoming events. Otherwise, I think the Torpedo Factory is pretty interesting - small artisan workshops in an old Torpedo Factory building. There are also several historic homes and churches to visit. Check the website to see what would be most interesting to you.

I'm a resident of Alexandria, and I love Old Town. Shopping along the lower part of King St. (near the water), going to the city waterfront and enjoying the scenery there, and maybe taking a boat ride would be my suggestions. You can get boat rides from the city dock at the end of King St. Some have a destination-Georgetown, Mt. Vernon, etc., while others just go down the river a bit (to Jones Point lighthouse, for example-which isn't much of a lighthouse, by the way) and a quick ride while enjoying being on the water.

There are numerous places to eat on King St.-usually the closer to the water, the worse the food and the more touristy they get- The exception to that is Mai Thai, which is almost right on the water but yet is still excellent food. Further up on King St. are better restaurants-Cafe Salsa (Latin), Austin Grill (local Tex-Mex chain), La Tasca (local tapas chain), etc. Since you don't have much time, you may not want a sit-down restaurant-Bittersweet Cafe (also on King) is a good sandwich shop, there's also a La Madeline (national chain that's pretty good-soup, sandwiches, etc.)

Good luck!
