The plan is to fly in on a Saturday into either Dulles or BWI (whichever is cheaper). I plan on renting a car and driving to Alexandria, VA and staying at one of 3 places: Hampton Inn (Old Town/ King St. Metro), Hampton Inn ( Old Town Area South), or Residence Inn Alexandria Old Towne. I have also considered staying at Quality Inn Mount Vernon. I want to be close enough to a Metro Station so I can go into DC easily. I also want a safe area to stay. On Sunday and Monday, we plan to go into DC and do most things in the mall area that we are interested in. We want to see the following: Arlington National Cemetery, Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, National Air and Space Museum, and other memorials close by. We also want to see Mount Vernon and the National Cathedral if these things aren’t too far out of the way. On Tuesday morning, we would like to take a White House tour. Then we will be off to Williamsburg, VA for the rest of the week. Here is what I would like to know. Is my plan good? Am I staying in the right area (Alexandria?)? What else are can’t miss things that wouldn’t be too far out of the way? Any advice is appreciated. I will have my wife and 2 kids with me (ages 11 and 13).
