Hotel accessible to ferry

We plan to take a day trip as foot passengers to SJI. We will stay in hotel 1 night either side. Please advise where best to stay - do we stay close to ferry (and if so which hotel/s) and leave car at the hotel or is there easy parking close to the ferry - or, indeed, is there some public transport to the ferry terminal from other locations that might enable us to use other recommended properties.

Thanks in advance for constructive advice.

The only lodging close to the Anacortes ferry terminal is 1 block from the ferry terminal named Ship Harbor Inn. 5316 Ferry Terminal Road, Anacortes, WA 98221. Phone: 360-293-5177; Toll-free: 1-800-852-8568; web site http://www.shipharborinn.com/ All the other lodgings are 4 or so miles away in the town of Anacortes (mostly on Commercial Ave.). I don't know of any lodging that has free transport to the ferry landing in Anacortes but there might be some. Anacortes chamber of commerce visitor web site is at http://www.anacortes.org/

In Friday Harbor the ferry comes right to the main town so all FH lodgings are within 1 to 6 blocks from the ferry. I know some (like Best Western Inn Friday Harbor) have a van to transport people/luggage from the ferry.

We're going to drive up in 2 cars, park 1, and drive on with 1 (we have to come back early - hence the 2nd car). If the terminal parking lots are full, what would be the best alternative for parking?

The WSDOT ferry has multiple parking lots of its own and also there are private companies near the closed restaurant Charlie's (on the left side right before the ferry ticket pay kiosks) which are available and I think maybe cheaper (the signs say $5 I think). These lots are unattended, you just leave the amount owed in marked envelope box. The walk to the terminal is minimally longer than the WSDOT lots.

travguy, have you arranged for a rental car? Or, were you going to use the shuttle or cab service. There's much to see on the island, you will need wheels.

Bring a picnic. To see Orcas, check with the Whale Museum, Friday Harbor Labs (UW Oceanographic facilities), as to the whale migration and tracks. Watch for tour boats on west side of island as indicators of whale sightings. See whales also from South Beach; go to low hill at north end of beach.
