Salvador, first timers, lots of questions

2 travelers will be in Salvador staying with local family, July 3-17. What can we expect during the first two weeks of stay? Temperature, local currency/prices, safety? Also, any tips or fun hangouts appreciated. We are a young American couple who love to eat, drink, and play futbol! And desperately looking for 2 quarterfinal game 59 (July 5th) tickets!

Hey...

The Wikipedia and Wikitravel articles about Salvador will answer a lot of your questions:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salvador,_Bahia

http://wikitravel.org/en/Salvador

There's info here on TA as well.

Another good site I've found is "Salvador Central": http://www.salvadorcentral.com/

There's also Lonely Planet: lonelyplanet.com/brazil/…salvador

As for tickets, try viagogo.com/Sports-Tickets/…E-553971

Quite a few tickets--but they're not cheap!

Salvador is an interesting place to stay.

Temperature wise we have an average of between 27-29°C at this time of the year and some rain every now and then.

Local currency is the Brazilian Real, about 2.1R$=1US$

Food costs varies on your taste / needs, it is perfectly possible to have a decent lunch for 15 to 20R$, but in some places (where tourism is more active for example) prices can rise a lot higher. The typical 'moqueca' (bahian stew) can be found for about 40-80R$ serving 2 persons.

Also try the typical 'comida a kilo', you choose whatever and how much you want from a buffet and then pay by the weight of your plate.

Have fun in Bahia

Hi all! We are here! Last nights game was amazing!!! But we are a bit turned around! We are near the Iguatemi Shopping but have no idea where to go. Also trying to stay positive as we're wondering if we picked the wrong area to stay. Our local family keeps warning us about taking our small backpack with us and going out at night. Should we start looking to stay in another area?? We originally wanted to live on the beach for our stay. What should we do?? PLEASE HELP!!!!!
