visiting Fortaleza

How safe is it to walk on the beaches in Fortaleza durig the day? Are there certain beaches safer than others? Anyone familiar with Novotel hotel? Are ATMs safe to use? Are there general safety issues to consider other than the usual traveling in a foreign country?

The center beach (Praia de Iracema) isn't good for swimming but there are bars with chairs you can use and eat something and have a beer. You will see hundreds of people walking on the broad sidewalk along the beach, specially in the afternoon. So it is relativelly safe. Don't wear any jewery and don't talk on your cell phone while walkink.

The beaches to go swimming are in Praia do Futuro where there are huge restaurants (called Barracas) with lots of tents on the beach and even swimming pools (they let you use it if you consume food). Most accept Credit Card. Try Crocobeach, Vira Verão, etc. People ussually stay at their restaurant and don't walk much on the Praia do Futuro.

Each night one these restaurants will hold a special theme, like comedy show, crab day, etc. Ask at your hotel. Take a taxi to go and come back.

Praia do Futuro is bordered by one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Fortaleza, the Serviluz favela. Under no circumstances walk through deserted areas of this beach, even if moving between two crowded places. And don't buy anything from food vendors that stroll along the beach, their fare being a potential hazard to your health. (Note: bus stops are notoriously robbery-ridden after sunset.)

Even tough high crime rate in Fortaleza, we haven't experienced any trouble. As long as you don't flash loads of cash and wear shiny jewelry then you should be fine. If you want to go to the beach at night, then reconsider. At Praia Iracema walk you be safe at Praia futuro u get robbed or worse. We have been visitting Fortaleza 7 times now, so I can recomend it. at day time we go to Atlantis (Barraca) never had any problems there. For restaurants I would recomend to visit the fishmarket. There u buy seafood, after that you go to the restaurant right by and they make the food with the rest. The only hazzard there is that almost all only speak portuguese.
