Try to go by plane, specially if you´ll arrive at Guarulhos you gonna get nice rates if you buy the tickets by internet. Probably if you buy roundtrip the price it will be better.
The bus station is far and the trip by bus is very boring...
I recently took a bus from Rio to Santos which is approximately same distance. perhaps a 1/2 hour shorter than SP. It was R$93 one way for the best seating and took about 6.5 hours. The seats fold all the way down to almost horizontal so you can sleep ( though the roads are a bit bumpy). If I had to do all over again I would fly especially if I were already in the airport ( and I am surprised that Air Canada doesn't have a partner that would complete your trip as part of your flight plan).
And regarding the rates, to be better compared you must add on the bus option your transport to the bus station... (from the airport)... By cab it would be R$60/R$70 (U$30) average. Taking a bus to the bus station may be possible, but I dont know the companies and timetables... anyway maybe is too much trouble to save small money...
The bus one way is about 100.reais.. one way or R/T by air is 255.reais..
If you need to return to SP the palne is a better deal, 40 min travel time vs. 6 hours..
like all the times...
the choice is about money or time.
what is most important to u?
wow... i need to remember u that brazilian planes use to have long delays, so, perhaps the plane ar not so fast...
and they use to fall too... lol
do u remember the legacy case? theres many others...

The timetable is very good! A lot of bus....
There is a fligth from air canada arriving in São Paulo at 11:20...and at this moments the customs Isn´t so busy (most internationals flgths arriving early)... and the rush-hours in São Paulo is ok. More-less 40 minutes from International Airport to Tietê Station!
Enjoy your trip!
If you choose to travel by bus, you should be aware that Tiete is not only the largest bus terminal in South America, but also the most dangerous. Please watch your luggage carefully, move with a purpose, and do not keep your money or passport in your luggage, keep it in a pouch tucked into your clothing for protection.
Good luck.
