Need help with Honeymoon Intinerary PLEASE!!!!

We are in currently planning our honeymoon to SA for the first 18 days of May 2013. We have never been to SA we would really appreciate any help we can get!!

At the moment we are considering the following itinerary:

Fly Ireland - Rio - Transfer to Buzios for 3 nights to relax, Transfer to Rio for 5 nights. Fly Rio to BA - 5 nights in BA, Train to El Tigre for 3 nights and return to BA for flight home.

As we are typical pale skinned Irish we do not really have any interest sun lounging or lying out on a beach for a day. We would ideally love to experience some of the 'real' SA. Are we wasting too much time by taking in Buzios and Rio for a total of 8 nights? If so we are considering flying down to El Calafete for 3 nights and shorten our trips to Rio.

Any comments or recommendations would be great. Open to any ideas, struggling with itinerary and don't want to ruin the trip by taking in too much either.

This looks like an excellent itinerary, although I think 5 nights in BA are 2 nights too many. You might want to consider two days in Montevideo, Uruguay, just across the river from BA.

Five night in Rio are just right. Lots to see and do here. Some things and places to consider in Rio:

Corcovado Information:

Hours: 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., the train leaving every half hour.

Ticket price for adults: R$45

Sugar Loaf Information:

Hours: the ticket office opens at 8:00 a.m. and closes at 7:50 p.m.

The park always closes one hour after the ticket office.

The cable cars depart every 20 minutes or whenever full capacity is reached (65 passengers).

Ticket price for adults: R$53

Lagoa is the neighborhood around the lagoon Rodrigo de Freitas. It is one of Rio's nicer areas for walking or biking.

Video of Lagoa:

Rio’s Botanical Garden (Jardim Botânico) is a nature park containing more than 6,000 different species of tropical and subtropical plants and trees and 140 species of birds.

Think about having Brazil’s famous national dish, feijoada, a savory stew of black beans and various meats, at Casa da Feijoada, which is reputed to have the best-tasting feijoada in Ipanema. The restaurant is located right near General Osório Square (Rua Prudente de Morais 10).

Visit Santa Teresa. This is something you can easily, safely, and inexpensively do on your own via the Metro from the Zona Sul, which is also a wonderful way to meet everyday Cariocas, many of whom speak some English and seem eager to chat with visitors.

Santa Teresa, in the Lapa/Centro area, is replete with charming colonial houses, little shops, fruit and vegetable markets, galleries, and restaurants.

Get off at Carioca Metro Station, walk to a nearby bus stop for a bus that will take you to Santa Teresa in ten minutes.

After Santa Teresa you might want to visit the Metropolitan Cathedral

and the Confeitaria Colombo in nearby Centro.

Confeitaria Colombo now has a location in Copacabana, Café do Forte, located at Copacabana Fort, facing Copacabana Beach.

And don’t forget the Hippie Fair in General Osório Square in Ipanema on Sundays:

Insider Guide to Rio:

Lapa is the historic home of samba music, the centre of Rio’s nightlife, and one of the city’s most visited areas. Don’t miss it.

“Lapa offers an alternative to the slick, soulless clubs of the Zona Sul (or South Zone)….”

“The turn of the century buildings in Lapa, tucked under the arches…had long been neglected and never made part of Rio‘s glamorous nightlife scene. Over the last 15 years or so though, Lapa has turned itself into possibly Rio‘s favorite nightlife area.”

The Best Music Venues in Lapa:

Rio Scenarium: go early (7 p.m.) and avoid the long lines.

As you are on your honeymoon, try to visit Paquetá, supposedly the most romantic place in Rio. It is an island in the middle of the bay, only accessible by ferry boat, known as the "Island of Loves". No cars allowed on the island so you must get around on foot, by bicycle or on horse-drawn buggies. Allow 1 1/2 hours travel time each way and 2 or 3 hours on the island. The ferryboat leaves from XV Square, downtown.

I know that the main goal of the trip may not be visiting many places, so depending on your pace, it may not be doable, but my suggested itinerary for your 18 days in this area of "my continent" is handy and has a huge romantic approach as well:

from Rio de Janeiro Int´l airport, take a private or shared transfer straight to Paraty (5h) and spend this half day and more 2 full days there (better during quiter week days) www.paratytours.com www.greentoadbus.com

On the way back, ask the transfer to leave you at Rio Bus Terminal and take a regular bus to Buzios (3h) spending 3 days there (better on a weekend - livelier). Do not miss an afternoon till sunset in Arraial do Cabo´s Pontal do Atalaia as a side trip! Or just take a private trasfer: www.trixrentacar.com.br

Back to Rio, stay here for 4 to 5 full days.

You could take a plane to Foz do Iguacu-PR (Bra) and spend at least one full day to experience the falls and then, cross the border and take a plane from Puerto Iguazu (Arg) to BsAs. Foz do Iguaçú/PR: 1 night and 1 full day.

BsAs: 3 full days, one dedicated to Tigres.

And then, take the ferry (Buquebus) from BsAs to Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay. Spend one night there.

After that, head to Montevideo by a 2h30' ride by bus or taxi and do not miss a romantic dining at Rara Avis and a fine lunch at Bodega Bouza. Stay 2 full days in Radisson hotel, in the heart of Montevideo and then, go back home!

As far as Rio state goes, I like Gusdali's itinerary of Paraty - Buzios - Rio, or reverse with Buzios- Paraty- Rio. The Paraty to Buzios trip will take an entire day. You might consider paraty, then to Rio, then to Buzois, as the buzios back to airport will only be 3 hrs and the travel legs from city to city would be just 1/2 days

Paraty (also Parati), a coastal historic town between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, is about 160 miles from Rio. Worth checking out.

GUSDALI has given you a great itinerary, which I think you definitely look into. I was going to suggest something very similar.

Frankly, I don't think Tigre (or Uruguay) is worth going to when you have the possibility (and $$$) to visit the Perito Moreno glacier. If you don't have time to visit all of that, it's a no-brainer: spend the 3 days you have in El Calafate!

I agree with you, El Calafate and Perito Moreno area and simply amazing spots of the argentinean Patagonia.

But, regarding logistcs, as it is almost 3h flighting I'd not do that this time.

I like so much that area that I think it deserves much more than 3 days, maybe one single trip just to explore that region in 14 days (at least 10 if you exclude the southern areas).

I could also include the amazing chilean town of Pucon, Puerto Mont, Chiloe, the international lake crossing till Bariloche and even southern Punta Arenas and the Torres Del Paine National Park.
