staying outside of Rio for budgeting backpackers

Hi, before we start travelling around SA in May we would like to chill out for a few weeks on the beach. We could fly into Rio or Salvador. Does anyone know a nice cheap town near the beach? Rio appears expenisive so trying to escape the tourist rates. We will be heading for Argentina after towards Ecuador where we will settle for a while.

Thanks

Sheryl

Rio is very expensive, so it's very hard to escape our high prices. I would recommend staying at a less touristic area, such as Catete, Glória or Flamengo (these are three neighborhoods served by the subway, buses, etc).

If you're on a budget, come to Rio and travel to Ilha Grande instead. It's an island known for its virgin beaches and not so expensive. Several friends of mine travel there since they were teenagers, so they've been there on a budget several times. This way, you'll save on plane tickets, as Ilha Grande is in the state of Rio.

You're welcome. It's before Angra, in fact, but close to it. tripadvisor.com/Tourism-g303497-Ilha_Grande_…

Both Ilha Grande and Búzios have beautiful beaches and would be great places to chill out, but I don’t think the word cheap applies to either of them. Much of Brazil, sad to say, is becoming increasingly expensive for those traveling on a budget.

Ilha Grande (Big Island) is 95 miles southwest of Rio de Janeiro. The island is a largely undeveloped protected area and noted for its beautiful beaches and hillsides covered in lush tropical forests. There are no cars and no banks on Ilha Grande, so bring cash with you since not all hotels, shops, and restaurants accept credit cards. The largest village on the island is Vila do Abraão, where most of the visitor facilities are located, and can be reached from the mainland by local ferries and catamarans.

Búzios is a beach resort with an active nightlife 105 miles northeast of Rio de Janeiro with over 20 beaches in the vicinity.

Ilha Grande is a cheaper destination...many people even camp there. Pousadas (b&bs) are also less expensive. Búzios, on the other hand, is too expensive, as MonteCD stated.

Ilha Grande would be my choice. It is relatively cheap. But, though it is also a too close from Rio, it has nothing to do with the marvellous city´s landscape... expect a wild and almost untouched environment, a truly paradise for hikers and divers, with no urban appeal and a very poor bar/night scene.

If you would like to experience Rio, beside the alternative (but really very central and handy) neighborhoods advised by Sodre, you could also take a look at somewhere else in the neighbor city of Niteroi, just 30´from Rio by a ferry crossing through the beautiful Guanabara bay.
