Unfortunately, nothing is cheap in Brazil. It is one of the most expensive countries to visit. If you're traveling on a budget, consider staying at a nice hostel in Ipanema or Leblon, two of the safest neighborhoods in Rio.

Have a look at the links below and read the reviews to see if any of them might suit your budget and your needs. Look for the ones with a rating of 85% and above. Lemon Spirit, Harmonia, and the Mango Tree are three top choices.

Argentina is close to Brazil. You may want to visit Buenos Aires while you are in South America.

First of thing: you'll need a visa. Brazil requires a visa from citzens of countries that require Brazilians a visa. For instance, Brazil doesn't require visas from EU countries, as such countries don't require Brazilians a tourist visa. Have a look at the website from the Brazilian Embassy in Australia: …itamaraty.gov.br/en-us/tourist_visa.xml

In case you have dual citzenship - which I understand is something common in Australia - check if you'll need a visa. For example, I've met Australians who held British passports and were not required to have a visa issued (as Brits can enter Brazil without one).
