Where to stay in Rio? Leblon, Ipanema or Copacabana?

Hello,

I will travel to Rio for a week with by boyfriend. We like a lively neighborhood with shops, restaurants and bars (but not touristy). I've been reading very bad reviews for the hotels in Ipa and Leblon and better ones for hotels in Copa, however, people tend to recommend Leblon and Ipa as a better location.

Any suggestions? What can I expect from these 3 different neighborhoods?

Thank you

You may want to have a look at the Ibis Rio de Janeiro Copacabana, which is brand new and gets very good reviews and is one of the very best travel bargains in the city. It's only two blocks to the famous Copacabana Beach.

Hotels in Ipanema and Leblon tend to be much more expensive.

2. Re: Where to stay in Rio? Leblon, Ipanema or Copacabana?

Mia2005,

What you can't expect, unfortunately, is hotels in Rio to follow the same standards of European or North American hotels. Four stars hotels in Rio wouldn't be rated four starts in such parts of the world. Therefore, value for money is not something easy to find in Rio. I would just point out that this is a big problem in Rio, not in the entire country (places like São Paulo have wonderful world quality hotels, but it's a business-oriented city, so that's why).

So consider choosing carefully. Staying at an Ibis might be a good option, as you'll know what you'll get. However, Ibis is located in Copacabana, which is pretty busy during the day (lots of services, it's a walkable neighborhood), but if you want a nicer place, I think Ipanema would be my pick. I prefer Ipanema beach, which is nicer and has a nicer, trendy, crowd if compared to Copacabana. Just see the reviews of Ipanema Beach and you'll see lots of travelers saying the exact same thing. However, if you still decide to stay in Copa, Ipanema is just next to it. There are plently of buses and you could walk along Copacabana Beach then walk the streets that connect Copacabana and Ipanema.

If you're really concerned about value, follow MonteCD's suggestion.

Cheers

Ipanema has what you seek. Look at the Mar Ipanema, Rio Everest, or Everest Park hotel. Each are very nice in great locations and in the middle of the pack for pricing.

Or rent an apartment. contact RioUpscale.com for info. http://rioupscale.com/RioUpscale_IPANEMA_PERFECT_1+.html

We got a 2 bed apartment for Carnival on Visc. de Pirajá right next to Jardim de Alah. It's right on the border of Leblon and Ipamena so about 15 minutes walk to Posto 9 and Farme de Amoedo. Figured this was a good spot. AirBnB was easy!

Definitely Ipanema. It's safe by Rio standards and has excellent beaches. I rented a small flat there at a reasonable price in a back street area. You will be able to find such rentals online. Hotels are very expensive for what you get.
