Tickets for Sambadrome at Rio Carnival 2014

Hi, I'm travelling to Rio for Carnival in 2014, we already have our accommodation and flights all booked and we are wanting to get tickets for the Sambadrome on most probably the Sunday night.

Can anyone offer any advice on what is the best website or way to get tickets?

Also what sector is the best to sit in, and also if Sunday night is a good night to go on?

Any advice would be helpful as the we are quite overwhelmed & confused by all the websites and information online!

Thanks

You should know that all Carnaval ticket sellers are far from being perfect, but that

http://www.rio-carnival.net/

and

http://www.carnivalbookers.com

are the best of the lot.

Although some people have experienced frustrating delays in getting in touch with these companies and others have had difficulty in picking up their tickets, the vast majority of ticket buyers sail through the process without much trouble.

The people handling the ticket requests are seasonal workers with little knowledge of English, but they do their very best to get everyone to the Sambadrome on time. Keep in mind that there is no magical way of getting Carnaval tickets without encountering a minor problem or two, so be prepared to be momentarily frustrated and annoyed.

Rio Carnival 2014 starts on Friday, February 28th and lasts until Tuesday, March 4th—the day before Ash Wednesday, which is the first day of Lent.

The main Rio Samba Parade in the Sambodromo (also known as the Rio Carnaval Parade) will be held on Sunday, March 2, and on Monday, March 3. (It begins Sunday evening and continues into the early morning on Monday.)

The winning samba schools will parade again after Carnaval during the Champions’ Parade on Saturday, March 8, in the Sambodromo.

Are you suggesting that the 2 companies listed by monte are illegal in some way?

The cheapest ticket prices are from LIESA, the Independent Samba School League, but this option is only feasible if you are actually in Rio de Janeiro or have a friend in the city who can purchase the tickets on your behalf.

Tickets are sold on a first-come, first-serve basis, and LIESA has specific dates when they announce they are selling Carnaval tickets.

Clearly, purchasing tickets from LIESA is not a realistic option for the vast majority of tourists who plan to attend Carnaval.

Much depends on your budget. Sambadrome ticket prices vary according to the type of seat you buy. For example, tickets for the more centrally located sectors command the highest prices as they offer better views for watching the parade from start to finish. Prices increase toward the middle and are cheapest on both ends of the parade route.

Grandstand tickets in sectors 8 and 9 are the most expensive. Tickets in sectors 4 and 5 are typically less expensive than the more centrally located 6 and 7 but more expensive than the sectors 2 and 3. Sectors 12 and 13 have rows of chairs and are the cheapest assigned seats, which are at the very end of the parade route.

Tickets are in the form of vouchers until several days before Carnaval for security reasons and to avoid counterfeiting. The actual tickets, which are magnetic cards, must be picked up at designated hospitality desks in Rio or delivered to your hotel or address of choice in Rio via special courier.

Transportation:

The easiest way to get to and from the Sambadrome is by one of the round-trip shuttle services offered by the ticket sellers. Taxis during Carnaval can be hard to find and the metro is usually very crowded. Buses don’t have routes particularly close to the Sambadrome.

The main Rio Samba Parade in the Sambadrome (also known as the Rio Carnaval Parade) will be held on Sunday, March 2, and on Monday, March 3, when the biggest and best samba schools parade. Different schools march on Carnaval Sunday and Monday, the two main parading days, which are similar in terms of set-up. Six of the best 12 samba schools march on both days.
