Looking to plan a trip in Brazil from Dec21 '13 - Jan 1 '14

Me and a buddy of mine are planning to travel to Brazil and maybe one other city in South America between Dec 21st 2013 to Jan 1 2014.

We are looking to check out the nightlife, prefer singles crowd, but also want to check out other beaches, maybe some adventure sports, hiking, etc in general. We are coming from SFO, California.

Should we spend all of the 10 days in Rio, Brazil or do we have time for any other city like Buenos Aires?

Is it safe to stay in hostels in Rio?

Thanks for the responses!

I'd recommend six days in Rio, four in Buenos Aires.

Lapa is the historic home of samba music, the centre of Rio’s nightlife, and one of the city’s most visited areas. Don’t miss it.

If you're traveling on a budget, consider staying at a nice hostel in Ipanema or Leblon, two of the safest neighborhoods in Rio. A hostel is a great place to meet like-minded travelers. Keep in mind that during the Christmas and New Year holidays hotel and hostel prices dramatically increase.

Have a look at the links below and read the reviews to see if any of them might suit your budget and your needs. Look for the ones with a rating of 85% and above. Lemon Spirit, Harmonia, and the Mango Tree are three top choices.

You know you need a visa to enter Brazil, don't you? The process can take a few weeks, so check out the link below for further information about visas for Americans:

Definitely try to go to Ilha Grande, or "Big Island", which is a few hours away from Rio and is known as a very unspoilt beach area, full of nature. It's a place for adventure. There are tours that take you there (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g303506-d550786-Reviews-O_Verde_Eco_Tours_Ilha_Grande-Rio_de_Janeiro_State_of_Rio_de_Janeiro.html ), but you could also plan by yourself.

Plan to be in Rio for New Year’s Eve.

Rio’s Ano Novo, also known in Brazilian-Portuguese by the French word Réveillon, is probably the most anticipated New Year's Eve celebration in the world.

Tradition is for New Year’s Eve revelers in Rio to wear white in honor of Iemanjá, the Goddess of the Sea. Revered by millions of people in Brazil, Iemanjá grants good luck and blessings for the New Year to those who offer her white flowers, perfume, champagne, shiny jewelry, or sweets.

Although most partygoers will be dressed in white, some will wear other symbolic colors during Réveillon: red to attract romance, yellow for prosperity, and green for good health.

Over 1,500 policemen will provide security for the Copacabana extravaganza.

You can ring in 2014 for free on the beach, but if money is no problem, you can choose one of the many New Year's Eve parties, such as the one at the Copacabana Palace or the Réveillon 2014 on Sugarloaf.

Prices for hotels, hostels, and apartments in Rio during New Year’s often double (and sometimes triple)—and you may have to book for a certain number of nights. Rio hotels that offer a New Year’s Eve package in which the cost of the party is included often require a minimum stay of several nights. (Restaurants and bars near Copacabana Beach are usually jam-packed and have hours-long lines to get in.)
