My itinery for Rio , advice needed for solo traveller

Hi guys ,

this will be my first time coming to Brazil for the world cup , and will be based in Rio.

I have a few questions , so hopefully you good people can offer me advice and tips.

I will be staying 9 nites from 8 june 2014 - 16 June 2014

1. Will be arriving at Rio Internacional , 8:41PM , Sunday 8 June 2014 . So taking into account delays etc , if i only get my luggage at 11pm -12pm , will there be any busses or taxis for under R$150 to take me to my accomodation at a hostel in Copacobana that time of night?

2.Monday 9th June plan to be in Rio going beach walking around etc

Is there any nice Malls that i can visit and the names of it please?

3. 10th Tuesday or 11th Wednesday i plan to go back to airport as i would like to fly to Iguazu falls early in the morning and fly back at night. Would like to spend the day there

If i arrive at iguazu falls is there busses at the airport that take you to the falls , how far is it from the airport in iguazu? i wont mind spending the night in the iguazu falls region if there is accomodation , and then come back to Rio the next day.

4. 12th - 16 June i would like to go to a Fan Parks in RIO to experience the games.

where will the fanparks in Rio be? i hope on the beach there is one?

5. 13th - 16th June would like to go to Christ the Redeemer, sugar loaf mountain and maybe a favela tour.

Also what is the nice night clubs?bars in Rio that i should not miss. I would like to go there aswell in the night time.

thank you , looking forward to your advice.

My advice would be to book a radio taxi at the airport because peace of mind is very important when you first arrive at an unfamiliar destination.

Immediately upon exiting the customs clearance area at GIG, you will find three or four booths for the radio taxis. Just speak with any one of the attendants and pay for your taxi (cash or credit card). Process takes about three minutes. (Ask for a discount, and you can get around 10% off.) Now that you've paid your fare you won't have to worry about a driver overcharging you or deliberately taking a detour to run up the meter. Expect to pay around R$100.

You’ll be given a slip and told where to meet your driver outside of the terminal. You then hand the driver the slip, tell him the name of your hotel, and you are immediately on your way. It’s really very simple.

Radio taxis are for the most part new, clean, and the drivers, many of whom speak some English, are professional and trustworthy. You pay a bit more, but you do avoid the usual hassles.

You can pre-book a radio-taxi return at the airport when you first arrive. Before you are ready to be picked up at your hotel, it’s best to call the radio taxi number to confirm your prearranged time and place for your departure.

Yellow-metered taxis can sometimes be problematic. It’s very likely that 90% of metered drivers are honest and trustworthy, but as TripAdvisor points out in its Rio Travel Guide, you may occasionally encounter a swindler driving a metered cab.

Lapa is the historic home of samba music, the centre of Rio’s nightlife, and one of the city’s most visited areas. Don’t miss it, but always take a taxi to get there and back, especially at night.

As for malls, I definitely recommend, in that order:

Rio Sul tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g303506-d3…

Shopping Leblon tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g303506-d2…

Rio Sul is probably closer to your hotel and it's also larger than Shopping Leblon.

Regarding nightlife, I recommend Rio Scenarium as a must-do: tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g303506-d2…

There are several other places, but I'd have to know what kind of music you're looking for.

For Foz do Iguaçu questions, I recommend you have a look at their forum: tripadvisor.com/Tourism-g303444-Foz_do_Iguac…

I booked my iguassu falls flight via TAM airlines you can also try GOL airlines. They have both raised their prices due to the World cup.

Also look for Azul, which is another airline.

I think it's advisable to look for each airline individually, but it'd be also interesting to have a look at multiple-search websites, such as Expedia (which is now available in Brazil) and Decolar.com. I tend to use Decolar for all my flights and the last time I got a flight to NYC which was 300 USD cheaper on their website. However, they may ask you for a Brazilian Social Security No. (otherwise known as CPF) -- worth a try, anyway. If it's not available in Portuguese, use Google's tools to translate the website.
