Rio bus fares to increase to R$3.00

Rio de Janeiro mayor Eduardo Paes announced that city bus fares will increase to R$3.00, nine percent more than the current R$2.75 price.

According to the mayor, the new price hike will be accompanied by improvements to the city’s bus services.

I think he may mean the higher fares will, he promises, result in improvements, not will be accompanied by improvements (i.e., immediately when the prices take effect). There may be expanded routes in the short run. This will likely affect residents more than tourists.

The mayor says all buses should be equipped with air conditioning by December 31, 2016.

That all buses in hot and steamy Rio are not now air-conditioned may come as a surprise to would be visitors to the Marvelous City. Let’s hope the mayor makes good on his promise.

Actually the bus service in Rio is quite good, at least in the South Zone, well worth the fare of R$ 3. I was there last year and the lines I used (133, 409, 410 and 170) were all excellent - the only problem was the 170 that was chock full.

Different from the situation in SP where we pay the same R$ 3 for a terrible service. Recent mayors have been axing and shortening lines on a regular basis, and now any reasonable journey involves at least one change and queue.

So, advice for tourists - in Rio you can use public transport easily; in SP, unless your journey is very short, be prepared for the need to change buses, possibly more than once.

Rio sees a 25% rise in bus robberies.

The recent increase in bus robberies in Rio comes just a week after a rise in bus fares from R$2.75 to R$3 in Rio was announced, which has sparked protest and fostered resentment over the poor quality of public transport.
