Hovercraft may take WC tourists from GIG to Zona Sul

Rio is considering bringing World Cup tourists to the city from GIG, the Galeão-Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport airport, by Hovercraft.

There likely would be two such boats accommodating around 80 people each and could make about four trips an hour from GIG to the Zona Sul, the main tourist area.

Have to admit I was drawn in by the sensational sound of the title of this post. How do you find this stuff Monte? I give them points for being creative. I wonder if I would get seasick on a hovercraft.

It's mid-April, the WC starts in mid-June, and the government is now "eyeing" implementing this for the WC? I will be astounded if it happens. This sentence caught my eye: "In that case, the government would hold a tender for the route's concession." Maybe this will be implemented along with Sao Paulo's high-speed train from GRU, and Cuiaba's light rail system.

Maybe in time for the Olympics. Com certeza.

Large catapults may also be considered. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQ8jGqdE2iw

It's not clear that this will save time, or money depending on how expensive the boat trip is going to be.

You've got to get some kind of transfer to where the hovecraft dock, wait for the next departure, travel to Praca XV, disembark, and then walk out to the street and catch a taxi. If you are travelling really light, and know the area, I suppose you could walk to a metro station and take a train to zona sul and save some money that way, but that may not be practical if you have some heavy or bulky luggage.

And a taxi from Praca XV to zona sul is not that much less that a taxi directly from the airport.

Personally, in all my flights into GIG, I've never been bothered by how long it took to get to my hotel or apartment. I always get a fixed price ride from the taxi consortium and don't worry about the meter ticking while waiting in traffic.

Don't see this as feasible if they are only pondering a tender 2 months out. Novel ideal though.
