14 hour layover in Sao Paulo

Hi there

We have a 14 hour layover in Sao Paulo and were wondering what we could do with that amount of time. We are travelling to South Africa and really don't want to spend that amount of time in the airport.

Any ideas?

Thanx!

Please keep in mind that a 14 hour lay over in Sao Paulo is not really 14 hours. You will have to be in Guarulhos 3 hours before your flight and it will take about 1and half to 2 hours just to get to the airport because of heay traffic in the Marginals. Having that in mind you can visit Museu do Ipiranga, the Independence museum of Sao Paulo, or maybe MASP, the modern museum or even Butanta where they extract the poison from different snakes. or the Latin America Memorial. It really depends on what you like. You can also just linger around Rua Oscar Freire for some meal or a cafe while you look at the shops.

Unfortunately the Airport is not really in Sao Paulo . It is located in a nearby city called Guarulhos, the same name of the Airport, a somewaht industrial town. Therefore all the main attractions are a bit far away and you would have to take the marginals which have lots of traffic all day long to get anywhere. Do some research in the internet and chose one thing that you would like to do the most, like to visit any museum, then stop for a nice lunch in one of the many barbacue houses around Oscar Freire, like maybe Rodeio and then it is already time to go back to the Airport.

Please be warned that Rua Oscar Freire is EXTREMELY expensive!

Without venturing too far from the airport, you can visit the Internacional Guarulhos Shopping Centre for a fraction of the price of Oscar Freire and nearer. Get city bus No. 21 in the bus station, you will see the buses as soon as you leave the airport building.

Or you can get the Airport Service to Barra Funda, then head to Vila Madalena and have Brazilian Bean Stew (feijoada) at the Feijoada da Lana restaurant on Aspicuelta Street.

Ipiranga and Butantã are too far, considering the traffic.

Within easy access from the airport, you can also see the downtown area, the Modern Art Museum (MASP), Vila Madalena, the Football Museum in Pacaembu, the Portuguese Language Museum in part of Luz Railway Station, the Japanese Quarter (Liberdade), without having to venture too far.

What are the hours involved? Will your bags be automatically transferred? Are you going from international to international or domestic to internatinal? What are the airlines involved? Last time I had a long layover at GRU it was after an overnight flight and I got a day room at a nearby hotel.

We arrive from Toronto at about 12 pm and then depart Sao Paul to South Africa at 2:30 am - I don't think we have to claim our bags...but I am not sure yet...

Canadian citizens still need a visa for Brazil? I assume you'll get one in advance if needed (no airport visas). Based on prices for U.S. citizens, seems a fair amount of cost and bother for a quick trip to see downtown Sao Paulo. Of course, you'd have to make sure that with a stay of 14 hours you could in fact stay in the secure area and not need a visa.
