Battambang to Phnom Penh by train

This website states that there is train service:

However most guide books and websites states that Phnom Penh is accessible from Battambang land(buses) or sea(boat).

Can someone/recent travellers help to verify the information as i am planning to travel in Oct.

we were in Battambang last November, the train station was closed and run down, I do not believe that trains still run. The bus to PP takes about 5 hours, check Candypublications website for transport details. Your accomodation in Batt. will be able to organise bus tickets.

there used to be a once weekly train that did this trip, but foreigners were banned from buying tickets way back, something like 2005 and the train stopped running altogether a few years ago as the tracks were so bad it had to travel so slowly you could probably have walked there faster. The tracks are now in the process of being reinstated so there will be a service at some point in the future and one down to Sihanoukville in all probability but it's some way off. Right now road transport is the only option
