Driving ourselves to Laguna Verde

Assuming that I understand that the rental car agency doesn't allow the car to be taken into Bolivia, is there anything or anyone on the Bolivian side of the border that will care that the rental car is from Chile? Or are they only concerned with passports, etc?

As a Plan B, does anyone know of a good tour operator that operates a day tour to Laguna Verde?

You have to go through the Chilean control before you get anywhere near the Bolivian one. You need the correct papers (notarized permission from the owner of the car to cross the border) to leave Chile and continue into Bolivia. Without them you are driving a stolen car.

Don't know about day tours, sorry.

Laguna Verde and Colorada are usually part of the Salar de Uyuni tours. Maybe when you are at San Pedro de Atacama you can check around the many tour operators there if they do just Laguna Verde.

I hope I'm wrong but you may have a problem finding an operator in SPA to take you over the border because Chilean operators can't legally work in Bolivia and vice versa. That's why the tour companies literally hand the tourists off at the Hito Cajon crossing. If you do make it, go in the afternoon when the wind is howling and the water is the greenest.
