Shanghai's prime areas

I'm looking to staying in Shanghai and be around the shopping centres and main business districts. I also want to be in areas where shops are open and are still lively late at night.

However, I'm confused by all of the different areas that hotel websites have. So which of these are some of the areas I should look at staying?

Hongqiao District

Jin'an East

Jin'an West

Lujiazui Pudong New

North Jingan

North Sichuan

Northern Bund

People's square

Railway Station

Shanghai Pudong

Shanghai Puxi

South Jingan

The Bund

Xujiahui District

Yuyuan Commercial

Yuyuan West

And which of these areas would be too far?

Is there anything else I need to watch out for in any of these areas? ie. red light district/mugging zone?

Thanks in advance!

Around People's Square and Nanjing Lu pedestrian street; along Huaihai Zhonglu; along Nanjing Xilu; around Xujiahui. Don't bother with the rest.

Red light district... some of the nightlife strips can be slightly in that direction. I don't think you need to be worried about violent crime in general.
