Local Drinks

This wll be our first visit to Croatia and we will be staying in Cavtat. Wherever we visit we like to try, and if it's good stick with, the local drinks. Can anyone suggest what we should try in terms of wines and spirits ? Also are cafes/bars happy to sell individual glasses of local wine or do they only offer more expensive bottled versions? Any intereseting soft drinks? Finally is there anything "sugar free" and different that we might find? Any information gratefully received. Thanks

Wine in Croatia is good with some being exceptional but not as cheap as in Greece which I assume you like.

You'll be able to buy a single glass or a small jug almost everywhere.

On the subject of local drinks try Slivovitz (plum brandy), Kruskovac (pear liqueur),Travarica (herb liqueur) and my personal favourite Prosek which is a natural sweet red wine which is served with a lump of ice as an aperitif.

Mis Mas pronounced mish mash is an interesting mix of red wine and orangade which sounds awful but tastes great!

Kocta cola is a local type of cola and is lovely but very sweet.

Fruit juices are very good especially the mixed type which is very thick and unctious.

As Tynecastle has said,Kruskovac. Many restaurants & bars will actually serve one up to you free if you stay for more than a few drinks or if you visit the premises regularily

I also like pelinkovac(sp),a herbal/botanical which is great after a meal

The local beers are also good, favorit & Karlavacko
