Going for a 5 day trip in October. Any ideas for places to visit / stay around Osijek?
Kopački rit national park is obligatory. Spend few days on "seoski turizam" anywhere near Osijek. Wine and dine in Ilok.
Whilst there make sure you visit the untouched rural paradise of the region of Baranja, just to the north of Osijek, across the Drava river. See more details at http://www.tzbaranje.hr/en
I think 5 days might not be enought.
Seoski tourizam - would you recommend anywhere to stay?
Llok - assume you can get there by train or bus. where would you recommend to stay?
Would you recommend anywhere to stay in baranja?
in ILOK, hotel Dunav is one of Croatia's superb places, small yet very upmarket, with one of the best restaurants in the country. Overlooking Danube - really great continental place to stay!
Unless you plan to hover in Baranja, since it's so close to Ilok, you might also take a car for a day and just enjoy a peaceful ride in the region and stop wherever you please, particularly for a really vernacular lunch in a really vernacular setting of old restaurants in the region. e.g. Baranjska kuca (Baranja house) in Karanac, or vinarija Josic in Zmajevac... Spectacular eternal silence of old villages!
Someday I am going to get to this part of Croatia...nice to see things about this region as it doesn't show up much on this forum and I don't know much about this region.
You should certainly do it barrymanilow, it's amazing, the countryside as it once was :)
Its going to be interesting to work out an itinerary. Going to have make a choice on whether to hire a car.
Good to see this post and the suggestions of what to see and do. Am going to be staying in Osijek for 3 days in September. Definitely going to the Kopacki rit Nature park. Will have a car to tour the area but somewhere I've seen that it is a good area for cycling? Is this the case?
It sure is - there are bicycle tracks all over, well marked. Check some of them here:
There's a cycle route book available at local tourist offices in Vukovar area.
In Kopacki rit, the cycling office is at email@example.com
