Rijeka - Rovinj transport options.

Can anybody advise on how to make the transfer from Rijeka (arriving on overnight ferry from Split at 07.00) to Rovinj, we travel on July 7/8.

The local bus company don't offer times of travel in July on their website at the moment.

Their current timetable for Fridays only offers a 4 am and 4pm service.

Would the cost of a taxi be prohibitive for this length of journey?

Don't know what timetable you look at but have no worry about a bus to Rovinj. Right now there is a bus mid-morning every day, more during summer.

With such early arrival you'll be fine.Local bus depo ( unfairly) only shows runs from companies they own.So there should be 1-2 lines in between from the others.

Taxi is about 100 euros.

Yes, there are more buses by Brioni Pula comp., and even more to Pula ,where from you can take another bus tu Rovinj.

From the ferry to the bus terminal (ŽABICA) in Rijeka you could walk along the sea, but ,if the weather will not be fine you can take a taxi.

There is a luggage store at the bus station if you want to spend few hours in Rijeka.

Thank you all for your helpful advice. It is reassuring that we can expect to make it to Rovinj by mid afternoon.

Could I ask some further guidance, this time in respect to a proposed day trip to Trieste from Rovinj. We would naturally like to maximise our time in Trieste and the decision to be made must revolve around ferry and bus timetables in July. Are there any websites which provide the summer schedules for either service?

As we plan on renting a car for a few days to explore the inland towns, is there any restrictions applied by car rental firms regarding driving across borders, should we keep the rental car for an extra day to drive ourselves to Trieste?

You cannot go to Trieste by ferry, bus or car only. There are good bus connections with Trieste all the year , nothing to do with summer /winter time.

There shouldn't be a problem for driving rented car abroad.

There's information on the buses here. saf.ud.it/cms/…000057_resource1_orig.pdf

I'm not sure Trieste has a lot to offer the visitor. Other towns in the area are far more attractive. It's not usually a problem to go over the border with a hire car.

Car is much better than bus.You can zig-zag and do more.On your way to trieste, see if you can include Motovun,Groznjan,Savudrija,Piran, izola and at Koper exit - do not miss Vinakoper wine hangar.

Trieste is not that flat.Few museums,2 well preserved castles, foibe war memorial, tropical garden with adjacent scientific playground, concentration camp, aquarium, synchotrone accelerator,Old town in superb Secession style and cherry on the top - wall in between, gender divided, central beach.

PS

There is (complicated) way of dodging Slovenian 7mi-15eur-7 day freeway sticker. But maybe your hired car will have it.
