Panaji (Goa) to Hampi: train?, car?, bus?

I want to go from Panaji to Hampi. I prefer 1class train or bus, or car.

What is the best route?

How long does it take?

What do you recommend I see along the way?

Hi Jane, you'd probably have to get the train from Madgaon or nearby Vasco da Gama to Hospet Junction (nearest station to Hampi) as I did which would take about 7.5 hours and cost around 660 rp for AC first class (1A). See www.cleartrip.com for info and to pre book, its a great journey through the Western Ghats. I wouldn't know about getting a bus and prefer the train as you can stretch your legs.

You can book this trip with Day Tripper , costs about £50.00 with hotel for two nights+ breakfast of toast and jam .Travel to Hampi(Hospet) on the train.they take you around all the sights in Hampi on a small coach for about 12 people. with a really good guide. I have been several times , great value for money.
