Honey / Beekeeping

There's not much information about honey or beekeeping on the forum - understandably since bees don't usually attract huge crowd of tourists - but for some of us who are beekeepers, it's nice to see others' operations and learn about their method of beekeeping and of course the opportunity to taste local honey is, well, oh so sweet.

I have read a couple of places in the Munnar and Thekkady areas which have bees but would like to know if this is common for this area and likely a good place to search out local beekeepers. Is there a specific type of honey to this region I should look for (mono-source) or a type of honey the locals prefer versus what is sold for export. I know this is an area of the country with spice and tea plantations so I can only imagine what the honey must taste like. Any idea what species of honeybee is found in this area?

I read about a honeybee museum, I believe in this area, and the reviews - by Indians - were pretty dismal so I don't want to waste my time visiting. I'm willing to share honey from my apiary to with local beekeepers so if anyone can put me in touch with one, I am all ears.

Thank you.

Hello MrsTheo,

Kottayam , idukki and wayand districts are the main areas where bee keeping is done in large scale

Munnar and Thekkady which are in your list is in Idukki district . bulk of the honey is extracted from rubber trees here

you may contact MDS, to get in touch with bee keepers in the region

http://www.malanad.org/products.html

There are also honey collectors who collect it from wild. The forest department ( through eco development committees) an be contacted in Thekkady/ Periyar for more info on the same . You get to buy it from the EDC outlet there

Kerala khadi and village industries board is the government agency which coordinates all related government activities

apart from this there are NGO's in the region whose one of the activities is marketing honey. say for eg: Gandhigramam ( http://gandhigramam.com/ ) and Uravu ( http://www.uravu.net/ ) in Wayanad and MDS as said above

Thank you for reply. I do need to check the itinerary of my small group before I can commit to anything. It may not be until December that I have a definite answer or know where exactly where we are staying. I will be in touch just as soon as I know. Thanks again!
