amritsar in 1 and half days

1. Is Amritsar safe for 2 women coming alone.

2. We want to visit the golden temple, wagah border, eat good food and also shop where the locals do and not the tourist stuff. Any recommendations for shopping and eating places and safe place to stay.

3. We plan on taking the shatabdi and leave after spending 2 ngiths. is that enough?

1. Is Amritsar safe for 2 women coming alone - Yes there shouldn't be any problem, amritsar is just like any other sprouting big city. Just be attentive and alert as you would be in New york :)

2. We want to visit the golden temple, wagah border, eat good food and also shop where the locals do and not the tourist stuff. Any recommendations for shopping and eating places and safe place to stay - It is quite nice to visit The Golden temple in morning. later in the day you can spend sometime shopping around the complex area as it is situated within the old city of amritsar (good for old city visuals, good traditional amritsar food and shopping) and around late afternoon you can leave for wagah border (I am guessing you would like to see the retreat ceremony which is held around 5-6ish p.m)

3. We plan on taking the shatabdi and leave after spending 2 ngiths. is that enough? - I think you should do fine if you take the morning shatabdi from new delhi to asr. and evening one on your way back

Amritsar is a safe city for Women. Just Hop Over a Rickshaw (Tri-cycle) and roam around city. Ensure that you do not visit isolated areas alone, esp after 8-9PM. Otherwise, Amritsar is bustling with slow moving traffic and people all around.

Places safe and comfortable to Stay -

1. Hotel MK - 3 Star (15 Mins From Rly Station)

2. Grand Legacy (Close to Railway Station - 5 Mins)

3. Raj Continental (Close to Railway Station - 2 Mins)

4. Hotel Mohan International (Close to Rly Stn- 5 Mins)

--------------------------------------------------

Eating Places -

Amritsar is famous for traditonal food however you need to be careful abt your calorie intake and spicy food. Always drink bottled water(Easily Available.

Try 1.Tandoori Chicken at Surjeet - Lawrence Road

2. Continental/Italian food at Astoria Food Pavillion - Ranjit Avenue (Close to MK Hotel)

3. Crystal Restaurant - Cooper Road

There is a lot you can eat as traditional Punjab local food (Amritsar Speciality)

1. Kulchas for Breakfast (Potato Stuffed baked Breads, served with Spicy chick peas)

2. Fish Fry from Makhan Fish - Majitha Road

3. Mutton Tikka, Mutton Curry -Prakash Meat Shop - Maqbool Road)

4. Chaat(Quick Snack) from Brijwasi Chat - Cooper Road

4. Re: amritsar in 1 and half days

hi,

hopefully this isn't a reply too late...

1.Safety in Amritsar: well it is pretty safe for 2 women traveling alone as long as you are alert and using your head...don't venture out too far from the hotel in the night...if you find some one tailing you head for the nearest public place(some shop or something)...dress little appropriately..the general stuff you know...its a nice little Punjabi city with nice ppl...and well venturing out in the night like after 9:00 pm its better to get an Auto-Rickshaw(something like the tuk-tuk but bigger) and get your hotel / local contact to negotiate a rate...

2. I would agree with a previous post that visit the Golden Temple in the morning you can try early morning its the most quiet and peaceful...after spending some time meditating and relaxing...hopefully you can have Langar (24 hr community kitchen - simple, delicious food) served at the langar hall...

http://www.sgpc.net/golden-temple/around.asp

roam on to the markets around Golden Temple..namely Katra Jaimal singh, close to another city landmark "Bharawan Da Dhaba" (the brothers restaurant)...visit it for some really heavyweight Punjabi veg food...the market around this area are famous for fabrics, there are some retailers for shawls as well...BARGAIN...big time...do try some "lassi" (butter milk-sweetened)..its there all over the city but some places are better than others if you go straight out of Katra Jaimal Singh you will come across a movie hall on you left (regent cinema) opp it is one real nice place for lassi...

Again its your wish you want a decent more upscale restaurant we have Crystal Restaurant...(cooper road)...Bhira Chicken on Majitha Road (real local stuff)...other than that you have the regular Pizza hut and Domino's pizza but no McDonald's or KFC...

Stay: your pick close to Golden Temple or in an upscale neighborhood... this is an exhaustive list

http://www.hotelsinamritsar.com/hotels.html

but some good ones are Mk Hotel, Ritz Plaza, Ranjit Swaasa, Grand Legacy..all spread around the city...i could give you a btr idea once you decide which part(of city) you want to be in...

3. 2 days should be enuf unless you fall in love with amritsar that is... the shatabdi leaves in both da mornin and evening, the evening one rolls into delhi at 11 in the night so plan delhi accordingly...

ny questions please ask...hope i helped
