Ceremony in the Golden Temple not be missed

There is palki sahib ceremony in the Golden temple which takes place twice in day.Palki sahib ceremony is when the holy book Guru granth sahib is carried to a room for night stay. This is symbolic gesture.

The holy singnig is stoped, some of particuler hyms are read by the respected priest than book is closed and after performing the prayer the book is placed in a golden painquin which is carried by all the devotees who are lined up to take seva, it all happens amist chanting and reciting of hyms,A one man blow trumpet,It so spectecular and sprititual.

In the morning again same ceremony is being held when the Guru Granth sahib is taken back to the Temple, and the book is openned randomly and right page is read by the reader that is {hukamnama} the order of day.Every one listen to that respectfully.

The timing of ceremony dose vary as per the season

In these days in the evening it start at 10pm

and in the morning at 4am

The ceremony is worth to witness

I plan to visit amritsar in the last week of august mostly on a weekend. Wanted yur suggestion if 2 days are sufficient to visit the temple and the wagah border. Kindly let me know what time is the cermeony at the wagah border and if saturdays/sundays' are too crowded ? Also are the markets in the city open on Sunday's? Also wat's the weather like in the end of august?

SSA Asmita10,

well not quite gurinder but might be of some help...well there is no specific time to perform the seva at Harmandir Sahib...

yes 2 days would be just about fine...and Wagah is crowded on most days so weekends are no exception...your way out to beat the crowds is arrive there early like 4-4.30 as the ceremony is at sunset...usually 4.30 is a decent time ...also its first come first served basis...go early get good seats... shopping is better on saturday as very few select places are open on sunday...and well they aint much....weather would be little on the warmer side with some humidity...a hangover from the monsoon if its come and gone by then...usually hovers btween 25-35C loosely speaking...

Golden temple complex is opened 24hr, only the Golden temple is closed at 10pm till 2-30 am.as far as langer is concern it starts at 8am in the morning until as late as 11-30 pm,you can take part in seva during this time, seva can be done either making Chapaties or washing pltaes or distibuing food to the sangat.

At the border it is much crowded on saturday and sunday, it will be much better if you arrange a VIP PASS from the BSF that is at KHASA,with this pass you can easily sit in the VIP gallary from where you can view the parade better,in august the time of the parade will be around 6pm it remains for half an hr,

in those humid days it is better to reach at the parade venue half an hr before the starting of the parade, saturday is good to shop but you can also find some of the shops opened on sunday as well.

two days are sufficient to see Golden temple jallaian wala bagh durgiana temple and panorama maharaja of Ranjit singh and border

i agree with gurinder there are hotels like a dime a dozen around the golden temple...and well they are close to the old city shopping experience...try hotel Sarovar Plaza, hotel Temple view...

if you want to stay some where in the civil lines area closer to well more western style shopping then Hotel Shiraz Regency on Queens road, Hotel Raj Continetal closer to the railway station are decent...
