snokelling with sharks?

I have seen some photos posted from tourists who appear to be snorkelling right alongside full sized black tipped reef sharks on Koh Tao and I wondered if this is a safe thing to do?. I must admit it looks like it would be a cool experience. I looked up these sharks on wikipedia and it warns that they are regarded as potentially dangerous but seldom pose a danger to humans unless roused by food. Apparently most attacks are non lethal and consist of bites to feet and legs. I would appreciate some feedback.

Thanks.

People snorkle with them everyday - theres never been a problem. You have to remain quiet and calm as they are quite skittish and will dart away with sudden movements but they are a pleasure to observe. Dont worry.

The bay is called Shark Bay - unsuprisingly.....Had Thian is its proper name but you will also hear it refered to as Rocky Bay too.

You can snorkle from the beach - but the hotel has started restricting access somewhat. All snorkle trips visit it but then you have a lot of other people in the water with you at the same time which reduces your chances.

Best thing to do is hire a longtail and go on your own - or with a few mates - you can hang out and chill until you have your fill then.

The next bay around is called Sai Daeng and has New |Heaven Bungalows on it and the food here is superb - great lunch stop.

After lunch continue to the next bay - Aow Leuk for some of the best snorkelling.......

A longtail for a full day should cost around 2000B - but this is to circuit the island......so for just these 3 stops - even if you spend the day - it shoudl be cheaper.

Have fun!
