Koh Tao V Ko Phangan V Ko Samui

Hi all,

What a great website it a beauty!!!

We are travelling on to Thailand and are hoping to stay for a week on one of the above islands in July.

We are looking for a bit of R&R as well as culture on a budget.

We have chosen to stay on one island as a base and then explore the surrounding areas and islands. We have heard that Ko Tao is supposed to be amazing, our only concern is that its is a small island - will it be overcrowded?Ko Phanagan seems like a good balance as its in the middle of all three, where as we have heard mixed reviews with regards to Ko Samui.

If any one could give any guidance that would be great.

Thanks!!

Hi DaveD

Welcome to the forum.

Koh Tao is a small island but apart from Christmas and New Year never gets crowded. If you want peace and tranquility it can always be found. Culture, however, is going to be difficult to find on these small islands.

In order to give the best advice can I ask for some more info? Are water based activities high on your do to list? What is it you're looking for when you mention culture? Do you have a budget for accommodation?

Hi DaveD,

I Have been to all 3 and am going back to Ko Samui for 6 nights and Ko Phangan for 14 days at Haad Salad the end of March, Ko Phangan is my favourite of the 3, this works for me as its beautiful and not too busy.

wow Thanks for the quick responses, Dudes and Dudettes

I guess we will experience Culture in Bangkok and other places.

We will probably be looking for:-

- A Quiet Beach location

- Max budget of £10 each per night

- Beach Bunglow/En suite (If possible)

We are torn between the idea of staying on one island for a week and exploring islands or having 4 nights on one island and 3 on another?!

So far we have looked at the following.

Ko Phanagan

Mai Pen Rai Bungalows

Seetanu Bungalows

Ko Tao

Diamond Beach Bungalows

I'd split my time 3/4 nights on a couple of islands will be a better mix than 1 week on 1 island.

do you not think it might be a little bit too much?!

I guess the main benefit of the split will be that we will not need to travel back and fourth between the islands. I am guessing the boat rides will take an hour or two.

Have you got any recomendations on beach huts?!

Which suits your tastes better?

Koh Samui for somewhere a bit busier, more variety, shopping and nightlife. Avoid Chaweng if you don't want the full on, mass tourism experience. Still quieter beaches to be found, but certainly always feels busier than the other two islands.

Koh Phangan for swinging in a hammock and relaxing. Avoid Haad Rin if you don't want the loud music, drunken backpacker experience. Head north for quieter, beautiful beaches like Thong Nai Pan

Koh Tao for swinging in a hammock, relaxing and snorkelling - easy access to Koh Nang Yuan Island for great snorkelling (very pretty). Avoid Sairee Beach as it's the main party area, but away from there very laid back and quieter.

Better to set a new post requesting accommodation choices in the place you want to visit as there are just too many.
