Koh Tao - Where to Stay (Aug/Sept)

Hi, Firstly, thanks to all those who have helped so far.

We are looking for quiet-ish beachfront, a/c acccommodation, with great snorkelling from the beach. A really good restaurant on site would be great. Probably looking 3-4 stars type accomm. Don't like crowds, especially on beach, but would be good if where we stayed was easy enough to explore around the island. Is there any other option to get around besides scooter?

Some of the reviews I have read of various accommodation on the island sound great, but seem to have quite a walk to the beach - and no mention of snorkelling. Are there only certain beaches that have good snorkelling from the shore? What beach areas and accommodation would best suit what we are after? Would consider somewhere only a short walk to beach if it fitted the bill in all other areas. We are in our fifties, and enjoy meeting other travellers over meals/drinks.

We are open to all suggestions:) Thanks

Thanks very much Amubis, I had previously looked at Charm Churee, but would prefer to spend less than they quote online. We will be in Koh Tao for one week, as part of a three week trip, so need to keep the cost down a bit. Does anyone have any ideas on what beach area would suit us, and suggestions of places to stay in those areas please?

Hi

Just so you get suggestions that are suitable what is your budget? Also when are you going? August is very busy and then it gets quieter the further into September you go so it will influence the areas that are suitable, as well as possibly lowering prices.

Would prefer no more than $A100 per night, hopefully less. (We would like beachfront accommodation, with a/c, - possibly bungalows. I seem to be having problems getting responses re accommodation options that have snorkelling from the beach of their resort. I think Charm Churee does, and maybe Sensi, but haven't had any other suggestions. Is this because the good snorkelling is only reached by boat?

If we can't find absolute beachfront, a short walk is ok. Thanks.

The best snorkeling is offshore yes, but you can still have some decent snorkeling from the beach too. I would strongly suggest doing a snorkel trip or 2 as Koh Nang Yuan is a great place to visit, explore and snorkel. As I've said August is peak season and some areas will be very busy, however, by September those same places will be much quieter so the time you are going will be very influential. There's not a lot of direct beach front accommodation outside of Sairee so unless you go there at the latter part of September a few minutes walk, possible steps too, will have to be endured. If you go peak here's some suggestions:

Montalay Beach Resort - quiet, not a lot of facilities in the area but very good from shore snorkeling

New Heaven Resort - good location, close to amenities, short walk to Thian Og where there is very good snorkeling

Ko Tao Resort - Have beach front rooms, good resort with a good range of facilities, snorkeling is not so good and you would need to walk to another beach

Sensi Paradise - quiet and secluded with shore snorkeling, good restaurant, easy access to Mae Head and all the facilities the main town has to offer, probably over budget in August but achievable in September

If you do go later then the following might offer you what you are looking for too:

Palm Leaf Resort - beachfront bungalows, access to lots of bars, restaurants and shops, reasonable snorkeling

Sairee Hut Resort - beachfront, location and snorkeling as Palm Leaf

Simple Life Resort - 4 minute walk to beach, good location, good service and decent restaurant attached
