Hi SkytoSea,

June can be a slightly variable time to visit. This is mainly due to the West coast monsoon, which typically runs June/July time. While this does not guarantee our weather will also be bad (our monsoon is not until November) we do sometimes get some kick backs in terms of rain and wind. These tend to be short and quick to pass over however, so for most of your stay we'd expect calm and pleasant weather. That being said it is the tropics, so there's never a guarantee!

In terms of air temperature we only see a 10 degree variance all year round so it will always be warm, and water temperature is typically anywhere from 27-32 degrees which makes for great conditions for snorkelling and/or a beginner dive. Visibility and waves/currents etc will depend on the weather on the day. However as Koh Tao is only a small island it is not difficult for snorkel tours and dive centres to take you to the sheltered side on your boat trip so that you get optimum conditions and ease of learning.

Hope this helps. Happy travel planning :)

You're welcome.

Which side is sheltered will depend on the time of year. In June most of the water is pretty flat but actually in June the more sheltered side will be the east coast of the island.

We have been to Koh Phangan (next to Koh Tao) for the last few years and the weather has been most pretty good. It's always warm, but we did have quite a lot of cloud cover last year and the sea conditions changed daily in terms of clarity. We often had rain storms roll in during the evening for an hour or so. The Thai people where we stay call it "mini monsoon" season as the weather is changeable, but we found it pretty good all round.

thank you both for your replies

Cassnu--were your travels during the month of June?

GT Adventures--what might you predict of wind and rain exposure and water conditions on the south side of island v. the northwest part of the island during the month of June?

Hi again,

As I mentioned, its very difficult to predict accurately. Being the tropics, its always variable - especially during the West Coast monsoon. Could be absolutely fantastic, could be a few rain storms, could be a bit of wind. Or not, you can never tell until nearer the time! The wind at that time of year usually comes from the South West though, if that helps at all.

Happy holidays :)

I cannot help with water conditions as I don't scuba, but we went to ko tao, phangan and Samui for 10 days last June, apart from one very overcast drizzly morning we had wall to wall sunshine, it was beautiful.
