Itinerary advice - 30 year old travelling with stepmom

Hello

Sorry if this ends up being long but i would just like any advice and/or suggestions on my itinerary. I'll be travelling with my stepmom and U'm 30 so we're hoping to avoid places that are only filled with teenagers. We both enjoy eating out and drinking and keen to go to some fun beach bars etc.

this is the itinerary:

Land in Bangkok on 17 October for 2 days, then fly to Chiang Mai and spend 3 nights there then go to Chiang Rai for 3 nights then fly back to Bangkok, get the night train, bus, ferry to Ko Tao, arriving in Ko Tao on Sunday, 26 October. This is where I'm hoping for some advice. We have 6 nights as fly home on Sat, 1 November. I'd like to go to Ko Phangan and possibly Ko Samui but is it worth it for us? Should we just stay on Ko Tao, or are there other beaches that might be better?

thanks :)

Firstly be aware that it is monsoon time during October, it's one of the wettest months of the year! Personally I would take a night away from Chiang Rai and add it on to Chiang Mai and definitely have a night or two in Bangkok. Getting to Koh Tao is likely to be a bumpy ride as seas can be quite choppy at that time of year. Going to other islands is always worth, but it really depends on what you are looking for. Koh Tao is definitely about snorkelling, diving (depending on weather conditions) and other adventure sports, Koh Phangan is generally the laid back island - more about swinging in your hammock, there are some lovely beaches such as Thong Nai Pan in the north (avoid Haad Rin). Koh Samui is the most built up and commercialised of the three, but has something for everyone.

Agree with Cassnu on schedule and trying the other islands in the Gulf.

Koh Tao is certainly good for activities and has some fantastic restaurants (Barracuda, Bookers, Fizz etc) as well as the odd more grown up beach bars - try Maya Beach Club for daytime, Fizz or Tongue & Groove; avoid Lotus, Cancun, Diza & Choppers on a pub crawl night.

The north of Koh Phangan around Chaloklum & Haad Salad is really lovely, relaxed, quiet and perfect for chilling out. Haad Rin, home of the full moon party is worth avoiding. Koh Samui has some nice parts but is much more developed than either Tao or Phangan. If you're looking to shave off one island then I would personally skip Samui due to it's resort-y-ness and it's more expensive than either Koh Tao or Koh Phangan bu as Cassnu says, it does offer a lot of choice.

Hope this helps. Happy planning & safe travels!

Thanks for the advice. I thought since we are going in the last week of October that it might not be wet but might rethink the islands if this isn't the case. I've read that the mainland and more north have less rain in October. Is there anywhere similar to Ko Tao?

Thanks

The severity of the monsoon varies every year. The last 2 years it's been late and no rain until late November.

But of course this is never something you can guarantee.

I'm sorry I'm not very familiar with the other coast. Lots of people say Koh Lipe is nice, but having never been there I can't comment on its similarity to Koh Tao.
