Camping in Tsavo East

Has anyone been to Ndololo or Kandri, main-gate public KWS campsites in Tsavo East. What are the views like and are there any facilities? I keep getting conglicting reports on the internet. I am going to Tsavo with my girlfriend in October, we will be hiring a 4x4 so would like to do our own camping. Other than these 2 campsites, are there any more in Tsavo East?

Thank you.

Called in once at Kandiri campsite - very basic - don't remember any facilities. Views - none - in amongst trees - imagine it would be a mecca for mossies. Didn't see any security about either.

There was a camp site at Aruba Dam - very basic but it did have views of the dam and wildlife.

Going on safari without an experienced guide you will miss out on so much - they read the tracks/spoor and talk to other drivers to get up-to-date info. You could also get lost in the reserve - its huge and larger than Wales. Without radio, what would you do if you broke down?

Thank you for that information about the campsite. Although I have never stayed in Tsavo East, hence the question; I lived and worked as a safari guide in the Masai Mara for a few years so feel confident enough to try this adventure on my own, well with my girlfriend at any rate. I have emailed the warden at the park for more info, but just wanted to see what experience anybody else had of the area.

You do have an advantage over the rest of us safari do it yourselfers then!

See if the warden will let you see the skulls collection (macabre I know!). The stories behind the collection is very interesting. Its situated near Voi Gate, by the staff lines/workshops.
