Mabul on budget

TA members. How does Scuba Jeff, Uncle Chang, Mabul other budget accommodation, packages differs? Read good reviews for Scuba Jeff. We're a family with 2 teens, seasoned adventurous travelers and hv travelled well on budget. priority is cleanliness with peaceful nights and still dive in Sipadan, dive in Mabul, snorkel and enjoy the local food and island life. Yet not burn a hole in our pockets to allow for all other trips ie. Danum Valley, Kinabantagan, caves etc. Thanks.

you might want to check out scuba junkie..though if you have to spend a night in Semporna, stay with Dragon Inn instead(walking distance to SJ) with less party noise...

with Scuba Junkie, they can arrange the trip for you in Mabul and Sipadan as well as accomodations...

Thank you. Trying to be efficient, fly in Tawau hopefully early enough to get onto island same day. Looking into Scuba Junkie, Scuba Jeff, Uncle Chang, someone here mentioned Sipadan Scuba etc. I read one can apply for Sipadan permits personally, do you have any knowledge? I rather be independent and do the getting the illusive permit myself since we have 6 months if that is at all possible. Sounds like the 120 permits are all allocated to dive/resort operators. Cheers.

it will be more time consuming to apply for your permit personally and i believe they give out permits to tour operators only...i personally recommend scuba junkie as we had no problems whatsoever in booking our trip with them, we were even able to arrange a pickup from Tawau to Semporna through them..

Hello coboston,

I was wondering if you managed to get from Tawau(early flight) to an island the same day?

Thank you

Yes we had plenty time to get to Mabul when we flew into Tawau. Depends on your hotel/resort pick up.

Thank you for your answer, coboston.

Can you please give me more details(When you arrived, what resort picked you up, and when you left?). I was looking at the flights, and the earliest one can arrive in Tawau is 8:05 a.m. and latest leave is 20:50. I was also looking at Billabong Scuba.

we travelled with Air Asia and had an early morning flight. Did months of research and decided on Uncle Chang. A great choice, great divings and staffs, water chalet was very good. They were very professional and trustworthy with all our requests and bookings ie. permits for Sipadan, best dive masters namely Mohamed and Bridget. We didn't care about the food (all Chinese). Got fresh fish from 'water gypsies' (unique group of people) for the cook to prepare.
