Timbuktu security

Has anyone returned from the Festival of the Desert 2012? How secure did that area feel? Are tourists returning to Timbuktu? Is there evidence of national security forces patrolling the area?

Huge security presence all around the festival and no incidents of any serious kind reported. There were only a few hundred tourists there, however. I would get on twitter and have a look at some recent posts. For example: http://twitter.com/Pfro

Thanks so much Richard. I did the Twitter search and see nothing new there. We're headed to Mali in a couple of weeks and would be so disappointed to miss Timbuktu. At the moment we're determined to go.

AVOID DOUGOU DOUGOU TRAVEL.... BAIT AND SWITCH TOUR OPERATOR Paid for luxury tour, got stuck in cheap rooms, driven in car without AC, nearly killed by incompetent driver. Owner is a con artist. Government of Mali won't do anything. Official travel agency for goverment Omatho promised to investigate and we never heard from them again. These guys are crooked and dangerous. BTW: There were two bombings while we were there. Govt tried to cover it up.
