Ometepe as a family - 3 to 4 days

I've been reading through the forums, and am so excited to see so many recent posts. We are a family of 7 (kids are 10, 11, 12, 15, & 17) currently living in San Juan del Sur. We'd like to head over to Ometepe for 3 to 4 days - this next week actually an would LOVE input.

We would like to hike Maderas one of the days, but are completely open minded about the rest. Fill us with ideas with places to stay, eat, and play!

THANKS!

Hola Kianemikala.

Perfect time o hike Maderas volcano is not that muddy but you still see lots of wild life, but a bit hard for a 10 years old kid. Also some kayak with caballito de mar sounds like a good option. San Ramon or Jerusalen waterfall as half day trips. El ciebo museum to know a bit more about our history and currency, Altagracia Town with the church and the precolumbian statues, Magdalena finca with the trails to the coffee fields and also the rock carving as well as El porvenir farm that both have rock carving and path to the top of the maderas volcano.

And if need a good guide there get in touch with ERIC HENRIQUEZ (ometepetrails@hotmail.com) or he cellphone in case he does not answer emails. 0050589334796

Enjoy Ometepe.

We stayed at el Encanto near Santa Cruz a few years back. It is off the water and in a private, quite area with a few motel style rooms. They have their own restaurant. There is a "beach" about a ten minute walk away. Finca Magdalena is an old plantation that has been reborn as a non-profit organic coffee operation with a hostel and cabina business. They have a limited restaurant as well. It is about a quarter the way up Volcán Maderas and can be driven to. Both of these places are low keyed and are moderately basic and I would say, safe and interesting places to bring kids

I recommend staying at Finca Mystica, it's really nice. The hike up Maderas isn't very easy and takes all day. I'm not sure the 10-12 year olds will enjoy it.

Our family enjoyed staying on the beach at Linda Guest House - super helpful friendly interesting host, clean beautiful house, lovely gardens, she stocked the kitchen with food for us and helped with organizing everything from tours, taxis both on and off the island and we were really near to lots of things to do - we loved the lake breezes - no AC needed!

We can highly recommend these guest houses (one for larger groups and one for couples or friends).

Tony also has a house on the lake in Balgue - he offers shorter hikes that are just as interesting since he grew up farming and you can meet his family - he brought us a huge group of big delicious bananas - Linda used the ripe ones and made yummy banana bread that we still talk about while reminiscing and planning for another visit next year..
