Day trip to Machu Picchu from Ollantaytambo?

Do people with experience think it is reasonable to catch an early train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes , tour Machu Picchu for the day, and return to Ollantaytambo the same evening? Or is it better to stay in one of the Aguas Calientes hotels the night before? Can you do the Huayna Picchu hike during rainy seasion? Are other Sacred Valley activites, such as mountain biking, horse riding, and rafting happening during rainy season? We will be there in March 2009.

We were just there in October and had planned to stay overnight in A.C. to spend 2 days at Machu Picchu but our plans had to change due to the strike that shut down the highway and rail out of Urubamba. Peru rail changed our tickets and we ended up with just a day trip to M.P. We went on the 6:40am train from Ollanta and came back on the 7:00pm train and we both felt it was more than enough time. We saw everything that we wanted to and had time for a leisurely dinner in A.C.. The only rain we had in our entire trip was that day, just in the afternoon.

Actually we were happy to end up at the Kuchi Rumi for an extra day due to the strike rather than staying in Aguas Calientes because the hotel we had booked there looked awful.

I can't imagine traveling all the way to Machu Picchu and having only a few hours to see it. We stayed 4 nights at the M.P. Pueblo hotel and loved it. With 3 full days in the ruins we traveled over every inch of the amazing place. On one day we climbed Hyauna Picchu for an unforgetable view of the ruins from close to 1000' feet above.

I would strongly urge you to stay at least one night in Aguas Calientes but think 2 nights would be good for most travlers.

Have a great trip,

Chris

It depends on how interested you are about Machu Pichu. I got there at 9:30am, hiked Wayna Pichu and Sun Gate. Walked the ruins from North to South and was done by 5pm. It rained all day for me so for some people having a second day in the ruins gives them more chances for a nice weather! I was fully satisfied with my day (even with rain!). But, again, it depends on how much archeology and architecture you are into! Also the age factor (time needed to hike and go up/down huge steps) and physical condition plays a roll. Enjoy!

Four of us did the KM 104 trek to MP. We took the first train out of Ollantaytambo, and were dropped off at Kilometer marker 104. With our great Llama Path guide Wilber, we hiked (with breaks for lunch, etc.) until we reached the Sun Gate at about 3 pm. Great experience, great views, a good workout, and ruins along the way. We then took the bus down to AC, stayed at a hotel, next morn early bus up to MP with Wilber, gave us a tour, then left us to explore on our own, and took the 4pm train back to Ollantaytambo. It is called a 2 day/1 night tour. Llama Path handled all arrangements and details perfectly. You may want to consider this option, as it gives you a great day of hiking, and two days at MP to allow for weather. We went in Sept, and had two sunny days.
